Health & Safety Advisor β Major Civil Infrastructure Framework | Nuclear Sector
Westlakes Recruit is recruiting an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support the delivery of a major civil engineering framework within the nuclear decommissioning sector. This position offers the opportunity to contribute professional health, safety and environmental support across complex construction projects operating in a highly regulated environment. You will work with project management, engineering, construction and commercial teams to promote a positive safety culture, ensure compliance with legislative requirements and client standards, and drive continuous improvement across project delivery. The role suits a Health & Safety professional with experience in major civil engineering, infrastructure, nuclear, energy, utilities or other high-hazard industries.
Reporting to the Head of HSE, you will provide proactive Health, Safety and Environmental advice across project teams, support the implementation of company management systems and maintain the highest standards of safety throughout the project lifecycle. You will collaborate with project leadership, subcontractors, client representatives and operational teams to provide assurance, coaching and support while promoting a culture of safe delivery.
Responsibilities
- Health & Safety Leadership: Provide professional Health, Safety and Environmental advice across construction and engineering projects.
- Support project teams in implementing company HSE management systems and procedures.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, mentoring and visible leadership.
- Support the delivery of the company\'s behavioural safety programme (BRAVE).
- Encourage continuous improvement in health, safety and environmental performance across all project activities.
- Compliance & Assurance: Carry out regular site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, client requirements and current health and safety legislation.
- Identify areas for improvement and support project teams in implementing corrective actions.
- Monitor project performance and ensure compliance with internal governance processes.
- Support assurance reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Incident Investigation: Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses and close calls.
- Support root cause analysis and the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor trends and identify opportunities to improve project safety performance.
- Ensure lessons learned are communicated across project teams.
- Training & Engagement: Support the development and delivery of HSE training and awareness programmes.
- Deliver toolbox talks and health and safety briefings where required.
- Promote occupational health, wellbeing and environmental awareness initiatives.
- Coach supervisors and operational teams on best practice and legislative compliance.
- Reporting & Performance: Maintain accurate HSE records and performance data.
- Produce reports and trend analysis to support project and business decision-making.
- Support the development of key performance indicators and improvement plans.
- Contribute to tender submissions and pre-qualification questionnaires by providing health and safety input.
- Stakeholder Management: Build effective working relationships with project teams, subcontractors and client representatives.
- Act as a trusted advisor on all Health, Safety and Environmental matters.
- Liaise with regulators, clients and external stakeholders where required.
- Support the implementation of company HSE strategy across the framework.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience as a Health & Safety Advisor within civil engineering, infrastructure or major construction projects.
- Good understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction best practice.
- Experience carrying out site inspections, audits and incident investigations.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience supporting behavioural safety initiatives.
- Ability to influence and engage teams at all levels.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Experience working within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated industries.
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate or General Certificate.
- Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH, GradIOSH or CertIOSH).
- Experience supporting infrastructure, highways, utilities or heavy civils projects.
- Knowledge of environmental management systems and sustainability initiatives.
