Westlakes Recruit is currently supporting the delivery of a major long‑term civil infrastructure framework within the UK's nuclear decommissioning sector and is looking to recruit an experienced
General Foreman to join a high‑performing construction team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced site leader to play a key role in delivering complex civil engineering and infrastructure projects within one of the UK's most highly regulated construction environments.
Working closely with the Works Manager, Project Manager and Site Engineering teams, you will take responsibility for supervising day‑to‑day site operations, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and to the highest quality standards.
The Role
As General Foreman, you will lead site teams and subcontractors across a variety of civil engineering work packages, ensuring that construction activities are delivered in accordance with project specifications, programme requirements and strict nuclear safety standards.
You will be responsible for coordinating labour, plant and materials while maintaining a strong focus on health, safety, environmental performance and quality throughout the construction lifecycle.
Projects are expected to include
- Bulk earthworks and enabling works
- Reinforced concrete structures
- Infrastructure and utility installations
- Drainage and highways construction
- Structural and temporary works
- Major civils activities within a regulated nuclear environment
Key Responsibilities
- Site Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate daily construction activities across multiple work fronts.
- Lead site teams, Section Foremen, Engineers and subcontractors to deliver works safely and efficiently.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with programme, quality standards and contractual requirements.
- Promote a positive safety culture and high standards of workmanship across the site.
- Construction Delivery
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials and equipment to maximise productivity.
- Monitor progress against programme and identify opportunities to improve delivery.
- Assist Project and Works Managers with planning construction activities.
- Ensure construction works are delivered in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Health, Safety & Environmental Management
- Champion a strong Health, Safety and Environmental culture across the project.
- Ensure all works comply with approved Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
- Deliver toolbox talks, site briefings and safety communications.
- Lead regular site inspections and safety tours.
- Investigate close calls, unsafe acts and incidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Support compliance with CDM Regulations and project HSQE procedures.
- Quality Assurance
- Ensure construction activities meet required quality standards.
- Support implementation of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
- Work closely with Quality and Engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
- Assist with inspections, audits and quality assurance activities.
- Commercial & Resource Management
- Coordinate the delivery, storage and management of materials, plant and equipment.
- Monitor resource utilisation to ensure efficient project delivery.
- Authorise labour, plant records and subcontractor timesheets where appropriate.
- Support effective management of project resources and site logistics.
- Project Coordination
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers and Commercial teams.
- Participate in project planning meetings and progress reviews.
- Support development of work programmes and construction methodologies.
- Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience as a General Foreman, Foreman or Site Supervisor within major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
- Strong background delivering heavy civils, infrastructure or major construction projects.
- Proven ability to supervise direct labour and subcontractors.
- Excellent understanding of construction methods and site operations.
- Strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental best practice.
- Experience delivering works to programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving abilities.
- CSCS Card relevant to the role.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within the nuclear sector or another highly regulated industry.
- SMSTS qualification.
- Temporary Works awareness.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Experience working under NEC contracts.
- Knowledge of Sellafield site procedures and standards.
- Familiarity with digital site management and document control systems.
