Westlakes Recruit is currently recruiting for an Environmental Advisor to join a major long-term civil engineering framework delivering critical infrastructure projects within the Sellafield nuclear site. This is an exciting opportunity to support the environmental management of complex construction and infrastructure projects within one of the UK's most highly regulated environments.

Working as part of the HSQE team, you will provide proactive environmental advice, ensure compliance with environmental legislation and management systems, and promote sustainable construction practices across multiple project teams. The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams, clients, regulators, subcontractors and environmental specialists to ensure environmental risks are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle.

The Role

Reporting to the HSE Manager, you will support the delivery of environmental compliance and sustainability across a wide range of civil engineering activities, including:

  • Major earthworks and excavation
  • Reinforced concrete structures
  • Infrastructure and utility installations
  • Highways and drainage works
  • Environmental permitting and compliance
  • Waste management
  • Sustainable construction initiatives
  • Environmental monitoring and reporting

You will play a key role in ensuring environmental standards are maintained while supporting the successful delivery of nationally significant infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance

  • Provide environmental advice and support to project delivery teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, project requirements and company procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation and continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System.
  • Support project teams in meeting contractual environmental obligations.
  • Monitor environmental performance across construction activities.
  • Promote best practice and environmental awareness across site operations.

Environmental Management

  • Support environmental planning from project inception through to completion.
  • Work collaboratively with Designers, Project Managers, Waste Contractors and subcontractors.
  • Monitor environmental risks and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in the development of environmental strategies and sustainable construction initiatives.
  • Ensure environmental controls are implemented and maintained on site.

Incident Investigation & Risk Management

  • Lead or support investigations into environmental incidents.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor environmental risk registers and ensure mitigation measures remain effective.
  • Promote continuous improvement through lessons learned and best practice sharing.

Sustainability & Reporting

  • Monitor completion of environmental reporting systems, including waste, sustainability and incident reporting.
  • Prepare monthly environmental reports for project teams and senior management.
  • Support carbon reduction and energy management initiatives.
  • Assist with environmental performance reporting against project and client KPIs.
  • Promote sustainable construction practices across the framework.

Auditing & Assurance

  • Support internal and external environmental audits.
  • Assist in maintaining ISO 14001 Environmental Management System compliance.
  • Monitor corrective actions arising from audits and inspections.
  • Ensure project documentation and environmental records are maintained accurately.
  • Support licence and permit compliance where applicable.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a key environmental contact for project teams, clients and statutory bodies.
  • Build effective relationships with regulators, environmental agencies and local authorities.
  • Deliver environmental awareness sessions and toolbox talks.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to project teams on environmental best practice.
  • Promote a positive environmental culture across the business.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience working as an Environmental Advisor within civil engineering, construction, infrastructure or a highly regulated industry.
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and construction environmental management.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  • Experience supporting environmental audits and compliance activities.
  • Understanding of waste management, environmental permitting and sustainability reporting.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Degree qualified in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Membership of IEMA or working towards full membership.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Previous experience within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of Sellafield environmental procedures and governance.
  • Experience with ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems.
  • Carbon reporting and sustainability performance experience.
  • Lead Auditor qualification.
  • Experience working with environmental permitting and planning conditions.
