Westlakes Recruit are currently supporting a leading civil engineering contractor in the search for an experienced Project Engineer to join their team on major infrastructure projects across the UK. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineering professional who combines leadership capability with commercial awareness and enjoys driving project delivery from design through to construction. You will play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and to the highest quality standards.

The Role

As Project Engineer, you will work closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers and site delivery teams to provide technical leadership across all stages of the project lifecycle. You will lead and support Senior Engineers and wider engineering teams while maintaining strong relationships with clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commercial & Contractual Management
    • Ensure technical compliance with contract requirements.
    • Liaise with clients, consultants and third parties on technical matters.
    • Monitor delays, variations, risks and events that may impact project delivery.
    • Support cost control, commercial reporting and contract administration activities.
    • Contribute to claims management and dispute resolution processes where required.
  • Engineering & Technical Delivery
    • Provide technical leadership across all engineering activities.
    • Resolve complex setting out and construction issues.
    • Ensure compliance with project specifications, standards and design requirements.
    • Manage engineering control systems and maintain accurate as-built records.
    • Support the implementation of best practice engineering processes and procedures.
  • Design Management
    • Coordinate communication between construction teams, designers and clients.
    • Review design information to ensure buildability and efficient delivery.
    • Drive value engineering opportunities and identify innovative construction solutions.
    • Ensure statutory, regulatory and project requirements are incorporated into designs.
    • Manage the timely release and review of design information.
  • Quality & Environmental Management
    • Oversee project quality management systems and inspection regimes.
    • Ensure Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) are effectively implemented.
    • Manage non-conformance reporting and corrective action processes.
    • Support environmental compliance and sustainability objectives.
    • Promote continuous improvement in quality performance across the project.
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Lead, mentor and support Senior Engineers and site engineering teams.
    • Manage competency development and performance improvement initiatives.
    • Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation and collaboration.
    • Support the development of Graduate and Apprentice Engineers.
  • Programme, Procurement & Materials Management
    • Support project planning and programme development activities.
    • Monitor project progress and identify opportunities to improve productivity.
    • Review procurement schedules and material requirements.
    • Ensure materials are suitable, compliant and appropriately tested.
    • Analyse performance and wastage data to identify efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Health, Safety & Temporary Works
    • Review and approve risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
    • Promote a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with all project requirements.
    • Support high-risk construction activities and critical engineering operations.
    • Act as Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) where required.
    • Prepare temporary works design briefs and manage temporary works processes.
    • Assess technical risks, loading conditions and construction methodologies.

About You

Applicants should possess:

  • HNC, HND or Degree qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Significant experience delivering major civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and managing Senior Engineers.
  • Strong understanding of design management, temporary works and quality systems.
  • Commercial awareness with experience supporting cost control and contract administration.
  • Experience managing engineering programmes, procurement activities and material controls.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and leadership skills.
  • Strong problem-solving ability with a proactive approach to project delivery.

Desirable Experience

  • Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) qualification.
  • Experience designing or managing temporary works solutions.
  • Experience supporting high-risk construction operations.
  • Understanding of statutory employment legislation and construction contract frameworks.
