Westlakes Recruit is supporting the delivery of a major infrastructure programme at Sellafield and is seeking an experienced
Sustainability Manager to lead the sustainability strategy across a complex civil engineering project.
This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in driving carbon reduction, energy management and sustainable construction practices on one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes.
Working closely with project teams, designers, clients and the supply chain, you will ensure sustainability is embedded throughout the project lifecycle while supporting the delivery of ambitious environmental and social value objectives.
The Role
Reporting to the Health, Safety & Environment Manager, the Sustainability Manager will provide strategic leadership for sustainability across the project.
You will be responsible for developing and implementing sustainability initiatives, ensuring compliance with client requirements, ISO 50001 and corporate sustainability objectives, while identifying innovative opportunities to improve environmental performance and deliver long-term value.
The role requires collaboration across engineering, construction, procurement and commercial teams to ensure sustainability is integrated into every stage of project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Sustainability Leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the project's Sustainability Management Plan.
- Champion sustainability across all project activities, promoting a culture of environmental responsibility and continuous improvement.
- Ensure sustainability objectives align with client requirements, corporate strategy and industry best practice.
- Provide leadership, coaching and technical guidance to project teams and the wider supply chain.
- Lead the delivery of carbon reduction strategies across construction activities.
- Develop and implement energy management initiatives in accordance with ISO 50001.
- Monitor energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across the project.
- Identify opportunities to reduce embodied and operational carbon throughout project delivery.
- Produce carbon and sustainability performance reports for senior management and the client.
- Sustainable Construction
- Work alongside engineering and design teams to identify innovative, low‑carbon construction solutions.
- Promote sustainable procurement and responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain.
- Support the use of recycled, reused and low‑carbon construction materials where appropriate.
- Drive waste reduction, resource efficiency and circular economy initiatives across the project.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the primary sustainability lead with the client, local authorities and external stakeholders.
- Develop strong working relationships with project teams, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Support client sustainability forums, working groups and collaborative improvement initiatives.
- Promote social value and community engagement opportunities across the project.
- Performance Monitoring
- Establish sustainability KPIs and monitor project performance.
- Produce monthly sustainability reports, dashboards and performance metrics.
- Track project progress against carbon, energy, waste and environmental targets.
- Identify trends and implement corrective actions where required.
- Compliance & Assurance
- Ensure compliance with client sustainability requirements and environmental legislation.
- Support ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 management systems and associated audits.
- Carry out sustainability inspections and assurance activities across the project.
- Ensure accurate reporting and maintenance of sustainability records and documentation.
- Identify emerging technologies and innovative construction practices that improve sustainability performance.
- Develop business cases for new sustainability initiatives.
- Capture lessons learned and share best practice across the wider business.
- Support digital reporting and data-driven sustainability improvements.
- Leadership & Development
- Mentor Sustainability Advisors and project teams.
- Develop and deliver sustainability awareness training and engagement campaigns.
- Promote behavioural change and embed sustainability into everyday project delivery.
- Support bid submissions, framework opportunities and work‑winning activities with sustainability input.
What We're Looking For
- Experience in a Sustainability Manager or Senior Sustainability Advisor role within civil engineering, infrastructure or major construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of sustainable construction principles and carbon reduction strategies.
- Experience implementing ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation, sustainability reporting and ESG principles.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Experience managing sustainability performance across complex, multi‑disciplinary projects.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Degree qualified in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Engineering or a related discipline.
- Membership of IEMA, ISEP or another relevant professional institution.
- Experience working within regulated industries such as nuclear, defence or infrastructure.
- Knowledge of PAS 2080, Whole Life Carbon Assessment and Net Zero strategies.
- Experience supporting social value initiatives and responsible procurement.
