Westlakes Recruit is currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Environmental Advisor to join a major civil engineering framework delivering complex infrastructure projects within the nuclear decommissioning sector.

This is an excellent opportunity to lead environmental management across a nationally significant infrastructure programme, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, client standards and ISO management systems while supporting the successful delivery of major construction projects in a highly regulated environment.

Working closely with project leadership, engineering teams, environmental specialists, regulatory bodies and the supply chain, you will provide expert environmental guidance throughout the project lifecycle, helping to minimise environmental impact, manage environmental risks and promote sustainable construction practices.

This role would suit an experienced environmental professional with a strong background in major infrastructure, heavy civils, nuclear, utilities, energy or other regulated industries.

The Role

Reporting to the Health, Safety & Environmental Manager, you will act as the Environmental Lead across the project, providing strategic environmental advice and operational support from pre-construction through to project completion.

You will be responsible for developing environmental management plans, securing environmental consents, undertaking audits and inspections, managing environmental incidents and ensuring the project consistently meets client, regulatory and business environmental objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Environmental Leadership
• Act as the lead environmental professional across major infrastructure projects.
• Develop and implement Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) and project-specific environmental management plans.
• Ensure environmental risks are identified, assessed and effectively managed throughout project delivery.
• Promote best practice and continuous improvement across environmental performance.
• Compliance & Environmental Management
• Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, client requirements and company procedures.
• Support the delivery and continual improvement of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 50001 Energy Management requirements.
• Obtain and manage environmental permits, licences and consents required for project delivery.
• Maintain environmental registers and ensure all permit conditions are fully discharged.
• Site Support & Assurance
• Carry out regular environmental inspections, audits and compliance assessments.
• Review method statements and risk assessments to ensure appropriate environmental protection measures are implemented.
• Monitor environmental performance across construction activities, including pollution prevention, waste management and resource efficiency.
• Support project teams in achieving environmental objectives throughout the construction programme.
• Coordinate environmental monitoring activities including air quality, water quality, noise and vibration where required.
• Lead investigations into environmental incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities where necessary and ensure appropriate reporting requirements are fulfilled.
• Analyse environmental performance trends and implement improvement initiatives.
• Stakeholder Engagement
• Build strong working relationships with project teams, clients, local authorities, regulators and supply chain partners.
• Provide environmental advice throughout design, procurement and construction phases.
• Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks and awareness sessions.
• Represent the business during environmental audits, client meetings and stakeholder forums.
• Produce regular environmental performance reports for project leadership and clients.
• Develop environmental guidance documents, newsletters and awareness campaigns.
• Capture lessons learned and develop case studies to promote environmental best practice across the business.
• Support sustainability initiatives and contribute to wider business environmental objectives.
• Work Winning Support
• Provide environmental input into pre-qualification questionnaires (PQQs), tender submissions and client presentations.
• Support framework opportunities by demonstrating environmental capability and innovation.
• Assist with developing environmental strategies for future projects.
• Candidate Requirements
• Minimum five years' experience within an Environmental Advisor or Senior Environmental Advisor role supporting construction or infrastructure projects.
• Strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and compliance requirements.
• Experience developing and implementing Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP).
• Experience managing environmental permits, licences and regulatory compliance.
• Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
• Experience carrying out environmental inspections, audits and incident investigations.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Degree qualified in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Ecology or a related discipline.
• Practitioner Membership of ISEP, IEMA or another relevant professional body.
• Experience working within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated industries.
• Knowledge of ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems.
• Experience supporting major civil engineering or infrastructure frameworks.
• Understanding of sustainability strategies and carbon reduction initiatives.
• Technical Knowledge

Successful candidates will ideally have experience of
