Westlakes Recruit are currently supporting a major client recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer based in Warrington on a hybrid basis.
Job Overview
Responsible for leading the delivery of all Mechanical Engineering requirements across either a single large/complex project or multiple medium sized/complexity projects. For single discipline projects acting as the overall technical lead and for multiple-disciplined projects reporting to the Project Engineering Manager as lead for their specific discipline. Delivering project requirements individually or as a leader of a team. Actively participates in the development of more junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the project's single point of authority and accountability for the mechanical engineering discipline.
- Lead a multi-disciplined engineering team reporting to the Project Manager and working closely with the clients responsible engineering team.
- Responsible for the development of key design deliverables such as Design Proposal Drawings, Mechanical Flow Diagrams and Detailed Design Drawings.
- Checking and Approval of scoping and FEA calculations.
- Ensure that design deliverables are of a high standard and compliant with relevant standards, regulations and customer specific standards.
- Ensure design consultants and sub-contractors deploy suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
- Production of documentation that is technically accurate, grammatically correct, correctly formatted and professionally presented.
- Preparing and reviewing quality plans for multi or single discipline work packages.
- Ensure work delivered is within the defined scope and completed to time and budget.
- Manage resolutions to technical issues and ensure necessary change control is implemented and address commercial impacts.
- Ensure designs are compliant with CDM regulations and have designer responsibility under CDM.
- Present Mechanical engineering designs to clients and key stakeholders who may be discipline experts or non-discipline related.
- Present technical solutions at design reviews and HAZOPs.
- Production and checking of safety related documents such as Hazard Management Strategy and Engineering Substantiation / Justifications Report.
- Develop estimates, define deliverables, clarify scope/exclusions and develop programme logic at bid / tender stages.
- Mentor a team of engineers/designers to improve their own skill sets and enhance the company's capabilities.
- Develop and manage/maintain good working relationships with key counterparts in client or partner organisations.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- Chartered Member of the IMechE.
- Detailed knowledge of standards, regulations, codes and directives and how they should be applied.
- Proven knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques applicable to mechanical design.
- Strong knowledge in the production of Technical Files for new products / plant and equipment.

- Ability to undertake technical tasks and also disclose their technical limitations.
- Willingness to mentor more junior engineers and designers.
- Ability to work well with all levels of management, executive leadership and support staff.
- Work effectively in a team.
- Ability to make independent decisions.

Experience
- At least 8+ years' experience in the nuclear industry, at least 3 years at Senior Engineer level.
Other Requirements
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of CAE packages.
