Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for an experienced risk manager to be engaged on a permanent basis in Preston (2 days per week in offices, 3 days remote).
Role Overview
As the Risk Manager, you will provide leadership and oversight of the risk management function across a portfolio of engineering projects and programmes. You will be responsible for establishing and embedding effective risk and opportunity management processes, tools, governance, and training to ensure a consolidated view of risk exposure and to support informed decision‑making at project and programme level.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk & Opportunity Management
- Develop and maintain comprehensive risk and opportunity registers, including clear articulation of title, cause, consequence, ownership, and mitigating actions.
- Ensure risks, issues, controls, and opportunities are monitored, reviewed, and reported through suitable, repeatable processes.
- Undertake qualitative and quantitative risk analysis (including cost and schedule risk modelling) to support programme and project delivery.
- Integrate risk modelling outputs into cost, schedule, and scope baselines to support forecasting and validated budget analysis.
- Governance & Assurance
- Establish and implement the governance process for risk and opportunity management across the portfolio, including definition and delivery of the audit and assurance schedule.
- Ensure high‑quality, reliable risk data and consistent application of risk processes across all projects.
- Provide constructive challenge where processes require improvement or adaptation.
- Scenario Modelling & Analytics
- Develop and embed scenario modelling methodologies to assess uncertainty, strategic options, and potential programme impacts.
- Ensure outputs feed into programme‑level forecasting and decision support.
- Data Quality & Reporting
- Maintain accurate, timely, and auditable risk and opportunity data that demonstrates ongoing project and programme viability.
- Produce clear, concise reporting and dashboards for governance boards, senior stakeholders, and project teams.
- Highlight emerging or escalating risks and advise on required interventions.
- Leadership, Tools & Capability Development
- Lead the selection, deployment, and continuous improvement of risk tools and systems.
- Deliver training and guidance to project and programme teams on risk identification, assessment, and treatment.
- Promote a culture of proactive and transparent risk management across all delivery functions.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a risk management role within complex projects, programmes, or portfolios (ideally engineering, nuclear, defence, utilities, or similarly regulated environments).
- Strong experience in risk and opportunity management, including both qualitative and quantitative techniques.
- Practical understanding of risk governance frameworks, assurance, and integrated baseline management.
- Ability to provide clear, actionable guidance to senior stakeholders on the implications of current and forecast risk exposure.
- APM certification (PMQ, Risk Level 1/2, or similar professional accreditation).
Desirable
- Experience with risk tools such as ARM, Primavera Risk Analysis, Safran Risk, or similar.
- Knowledge of NEC contracts, earned value management, and project controls disciplines.
- Strong communication and influencing skills at all organisational levels.
