As an Operational Technology (OT) Engineer at Springfields Fuels Ltd, you will help maintain and improve the industrial control systems (ICS) that underpin our nuclear fuel manufacturing operations. Working at the intersection of engineering and cyber security, you will support, designing, and enhancing PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA systems across the site. Your work will ensure that these systems operate safely, securely, and in compliance with regulatory standards set by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the NIS Regulations. You will report to OT Systems Lead / Engineering Manager. Hybrid working available.
Responsibilities
- Control System Maintenance and Support — Maintain operational control systems (PLCs, DCS, HMIs, and SCADA) across the site's production facilities. Resolve system faults to ensure reliable operation. Conduct preventive maintenance and implement system upgrades to improve performance and reliability. Collaborate with vendors, integrators, and suppliers for hardware/software support and lifecycle management.
- System Design, Integration & Change Control — Contribute to the design, development, and modification of OT systems following site engineering and safety standards. Maintain accurate documentation, including system drawings, configuration records, and change logs. Participate in system commissioning, testing, and validation. Ensure changes follow approved configuration management and cyber security processes.
- Cyber Security & System Hardening — Collaborate with the Cyber Security team to implement secure architectures and technical controls within the OT environment. Apply IEC 62443, OG86, and NCSC CAF principles to maintain compliance and resilience. Support activities such as patch management, access control, and system backups for OT assets. Support incident response and recovery for OT-related cyber or operational events.
- Regulatory Compliance & Safety — Ensure OT systems and modifications meet the requirements of the ONR Security Assessment Principles (SyAPs) and safety cases. Support audits, inspections, and technical assurance activities for both internal and regulatory stakeholders. Maintain accurate asset inventories and documentation to support ONR and NIS compliance obligations.
- Continuous Improvement & Collaboration — Contribute to digitalisation and automation initiatives across the Springfields site. Identify and deliver opportunities to enhance system performance, reliability, and security. Support training and knowledge-sharing with colleagues and apprentices within the engineering function. Foster collaboration between engineering, IT, operations, and security teams.
Essential Qualifications And Experience
- HNC/HND or degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Automation, or a related discipline.
- Experience maintaining or supporting industrial control systems in a manufacturing or critical infrastructure environment.
- Working knowledge of: PLC/DCS/HMI/SCADA systems (e.g. Siemens, ABB, Honeywell, Rockwell, Emerson). Industrial communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, OPC, Profibus, DNP3, Ethernet/IP). OT network architectures, segmentation, and security controls. Understanding of functional safety (IEC 61508/61511) and safe system operation. Experience working in a regulated or safety-critical environment (e.g. nuclear, energy, defence, or chemical industries).
- Familiarity with IEC 62443, OG86, NCSC CAF, and ISO 27001 frameworks.
- Experience with OT monitoring tools (e.g. Nozomi, Claroty, Dragos) for visibility and asset management.
- Knowledge of change management, system lifecycle, and configuration control processes.
- Certifications such as TÜV Functional Safety Engineer, GICSP, CompTIA Security+, or ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Specialist.
- Security clearance (SC/DV) or ability to obtain.
