The Analytical Laboratories at Westinghouse UK are an integrated part of this process and provide Quality Control and Assurance testing to its internal and external customers' needs, whilst providing quick turnaround process control analysis to maintain plant operations. To support the company's increased production and development projects, there is a need to increase our laboratory capabilities to match our production plants.
As a Laboratory Analyst you will play a key role in ensuring highâquality analysis of materials ranging from crude products to finished fuels. In this position, you'll work with advanced laboratory techniques and instrumentation while supporting continuous improvement and new product development. You'll also take part in validating new analytical methods and strengthening your own technical expertise. This role requires strong attention to quality standards, safety, and Good Laboratory Practice. You will report to the Analytical Team Leader and be located at Springfields Fuel Site near Preston. This is an onsite role.
Key Responsibilities- Perform quality control analysis on various materials to internationally recognised standards (ISO 17025, ISO 9001).
- Conduct laboratory testing using techniques such as Mass Spectrometry, Ion Chromatography, Liquid Scintillation Counting and Spectrophotometry.
- Support continuous improvement by contributing to the development and validation of new analytical methods.
- Work with modern laboratory instrumentation and stay aligned with evolving testing methodologies.
- Ensure adherence to Quality Control criteria, Good Laboratory Practice, and all safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and wellâorganised work environment while meeting high service standards for customers.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform complex tests and interpret results accurately, with at least 2 years of experience in a commercial quality control laboratory.
- Excellent attention to detail to identify even minor deviations and ensure all tests meet required standards.
- Proficient knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and ISO 17025 requirements.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment such as ICPâMS, Ion Chromatography, and Liquid Scintillation Counters.
- Responsibility for calibrating, validating, and maintaining laboratory equipment before use.
- Strong recordâkeeping skills to document procedures, protocols, and results accurately, ensuring data reliability and consistency.
- Problemâsolving skills to identify and address issues arising during testing processes.
- Excellent communication skills for reporting results, writing clear documentation, and collaborating effectively within a team.
- Solid technical understanding of various laboratory tests and procedures, including physical and chemical analyses.
- Understanding of laboratory health and safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and colleagues.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of ICPâMass Spectrometers.
- Experience with microwaveâassisted acid digestion techniques.
- Understanding of the nuclear fuel manufacturing process.
- Training in handling radioactive materials.
- Previous experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for data reporting.
- Experience with statistical analysis techniques.
- Practical working knowledge of laboratory quality control procedures, including control charts, proficiency testing, and the use of certified reference materials.
