As a Control, Electrical & Instrument (CE&I) Designer you will deliver high-quality CE&I engineering designs that meet project, safety, regulatory, and quality requirements. Work packages may span the full design lifecycle, from concept development through detailed design to commissioning and handover. You will report to the Design Office Manager and be located at Springfields Nuclear Licensed Site in Preston, Lancashire.

Responsibilities

  • Producing equipment specifications, initiating tenders, and evaluating supplier submissions.
  • Developing detailed design drawings and documentation, commissioning support documentation and design handover packs.
  • Reviewing and checking CE&I designs and guiding and mentoring junior designers/draughtspersons within the project team.
  • Providing Intelligent Customer oversight for designs delivered by external consultancies (safety, quality, scope, compliance).
  • Ensuring all design deliverables meet required standards and are fully compliant with relevant regulations.

Key Duties And Technical Responsibilities

  • Produce CE&I drawings such as block cable diagrams and single-line diagrams instrument loop diagrams, schematics, etc.
  • Perform cable calculations manually or using Amtech/Trimble.
  • Prepare and manage design governance documentation (Design Quality Plans, Design Risk Assessments, Design Reviews, etc.).
  • Maintain ownership of design intent from design through to installation and commissioning.
  • Produce and check documentation required for UKCA / CE Marking technical files.
  • Contribute to and assist with the presentation of technical solutions at design reviews, HAZOPs, and other formal assessments.
  • Provide supporting information for safety case development, including engineering substantiation.
  • Provide input for project estimates, schedules, and resource planning.
  • Mentor junior engineers/designers to develop their CE&I skills.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external design suppliers.
  • Develop designs for small power distribution systems.
  • Specify and select instrumentation including designs associated with installation requirements (e.g. Instrumentation loops, instrument pipework, etc.).
  • Produce CE&I designs for modifications to process plant instrumentation and PLC-based control systems.
  • Work in accordance with design governance procedures and relevant UK regulations (e.g., CDM 2015).
  • Use CE&I design software tools: AutoCAD, Amtech/Trimble, Sistema, Dialux, etc.
  • Communicate effectively across all organisational levels.

Desirable Experience (Not Essential)

  • Safety system design experience (e.g. BS EN ISO 13849, BS EN 61508/61511).
  • Motion Control system design.
  • CE&I design experience within chemical plant environments, nuclear facilities or other heavily regulated industries.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years' industry experience, with at least 2 years at CE&I Designer level (nuclear or highly regulated sectors preferred).
  • Not essential, but the candidate should be working towards professional registration.
  • Knowledge of applicable engineering standards, regulations, and their practical application.
  • Experienced & qualified in BS7671, 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
  • Good working knowledge of CE&I Engineering principles.
  • Experience in working general operations within a nuclear facility.
  • Team player with good communication skills.
