It will equip you with the skills and experience for a first-class engineering career. This career will have long-term prospects across our site and the wider industry.

Training Journey

In your first 12 months you will study at level 2 to build strong foundations in multi-discipline engineering fundamentals: basic electrical and lighting circuit installation, and basic engineering principles. You will then undertake in the second phase of the year, discipline specific training in the training academy, including building up to the next stage covering 3-phase systems and motors, electrical fault finding and wall bay construction. On successful completion of the Level 2, the following 3 years of the apprenticeship are then spent working alongside the experienced maintenance teams across our production facilities on the Springfields site Preston. You will have the opportunity to work and maintain a wide range of equipment alongside understanding of the process control systems.

Your Training

On-the-job training is delivered on site by experienced professionals in our Engineering Academy and through placements across operational areas. You'll complete a level 3 qualification via a local training provider on a day release basis.

Pathway

Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Maintenance. Build expertise across three-phase supply and motors, electrical inspection & testing, fault-finding and repair. You'll also develop instrumentation and control skills, measurement & control, transmitters, level, pressure, flow, and temperature plus calibration and verification.

Entry Requirements

GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and a Science at grades A–C / 5–9 (or predicted). Enthusiasm for problem-solving and a genuine motivation for an engineering career.

How We'll Support You

You'll be guided by dedicated instructors and supported throughout by our Training Academy team ensuring you gain the knowledge, hands-on skills, and confidence to thrive in your work environment. Springfields is a site with a long-standing culture of supporting apprentices and their development – Springfields have been training apprentices on site for 80 years and roughly a third of staff are former apprentices.

Progression and Future Opportunities

As you near completion, you'll have the chance to apply for a permanent role on site. Many apprentices also progress to further study such as HNC/HND, subject to competence and aptitude.
