As a Human Factors (HF) Specialist, you will provide Human Factors expertise to existing operations and new projects, both locally and across the Growth area.

You will ensure that human capabilities and limitations are fully considered to reduce human error and enhance nuclear safety.

You will report to the Head of Engineering Governance and be based on site at Springfields Fuels Limited, Salwick, Preston (UK). This is an onsite role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the HF Design Authority for major and minor projects, ensuring HF requirements are defined, implemented, and assured throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Fulfil the Human Factors Intelligent Customer (IC) role for the Springfields site, providing informed challenge and oversight of HF deliverables.
  • Apply Human Factors Engineering (HFE) principles across the design lifecycle, including human–system interfaces (HSIs), control rooms, workspaces, and alarm systems.
  • Support the site safety case process, applying appropriate HF methods and regulatory guidance (e. g. ONR, IAEA).
  • Conduct Human Reliability Assessments (HRA) and task analysis to identify human performance risks associated with operations, maintenance, and emergency scenarios.
  • Review and develop operating, maintenance, and emergency procedures to ensure they are clear, usable, and consistently applied.
  • Plan and support verification and validation (V&V) activities, including integrated system validation, to confirm designs support safe human performance.
  • Develop and implement Human Factors Integration Plans (HFIPs) using a graded, risk‑informed approach.
  • Support HF capability and training, including contribution to a Systematic Approach to Training (SAT).
  • Participate in event and incident investigations, focusing on systemic and organisational causes.

Qualifications

  • A degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in Ergonomics, Human Factors, Psychology, or a relevant engineering discipline; and/or equivalent experience in a Human Factors Specialist role supported by relevant qualifications.
  • Experience in a high‑hazard, highly regulated industry (e. g. nuclear, defence, oil & gas, aerospace, rail). Experience with nuclear safety cases and HRA is desirable.
  • C. Erg HF status and MCIEHF membership are preferred but not essential. Candidates who are Technical Members and/or working towards chartered status are encouraged to apply.
