If this environment suits you, we have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Engineer, Preston, UK (Hybrid work arrangement available).
Your Day-to-Day:
- Act as the project’s single point of authority and accountability for the mechanical engineering discipline.
- Lead a multi-disciplined engineering team, depending on project scope, reporting to the Project Manager and working closely with the client’s responsible engineering team.
- Develop key design deliverables such as Design Proposal Drawings, Mechanical Flow Diagrams, and Detailed Design Drawings. Check and approve scoping and FEA calculations.
- Ensure that design deliverables are of high quality and comply with relevant standards, regulations, and customer-specific standards.
- Ensure design consultants and subcontractors deploy qualified and experienced personnel.
- Produce documentation that is technically accurate, well-formatted, and professionally presented.
- Prepare and review quality plans for multi- or single-discipline work packages.
- Ensure work is within scope, on time, and within budget.
- Manage technical issues, implement change control, and address commercial impacts.
- Ensure designs comply with CDM regulations and have designer responsibility under CDM.
- Present mechanical engineering designs to clients and stakeholders, including discipline experts and non-discipline audiences.
- Present technical solutions at design reviews and HAZOPs.
- Produce and review safety-related documents such as Hazard Management Strategy and Engineering Justifications.
- Develop estimates, define deliverables, clarify scope/exclusions, and develop program logic during bid/tender stages.
- Mentor engineers and designers to enhance their skills and the company\’s capabilities.
- Develop and maintain good relationships with key counterparts in client or partner organizations.
Who You Are:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- Chartered Member of the IMechE preferred.
- Minimum 8+ years’ experience in the nuclear or highly regulated industry, with at least 3 years at Senior Engineer level.
- Detailed knowledge of standards, regulations, codes, and directives, and how to apply them.
- Proven knowledge of theories, principles, practices, and techniques in mechanical design.
- Strong knowledge in producing Technical Files for new products, plants, and equipment.
- Legally eligible to work in the UK.
