We are seeking an enthusiastic Locum Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in haematology and oncology. This is a 12-month 8PA Locum Consultant Paediatrician post. The post holder would be the Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) Deputy Lead and will be based at Watford General Hospital. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals devoted to providing the very best care for our patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Paediatric Haematology & Oncology (Primary Focus)
  • Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) Activity
    • Delivery of SACT
    • Support the Monday–Friday infusional SACT service in line with NHS England National Service Specifications and North Thames Paediatric Network recommendations
    • Provide clinical oversight for chemotherapy prescribing, administration, toxicity monitoring, and supportive care.
    • Participate in one flexible chemotherapy session weekly.
  • Outpatient Oncology & Haematology Clinics
    • Assess and manage:
      • Two week wait (2WW) referrals
      • Oncology follow up patients
      • Selected non-malignant haematology cases
    • Provide continuity of care for children and young people undergoing treatment or surveillance.
    • Support the Lead Consultant in managing benign haematological conditions:
      • Coagulation disorders
      • Anaemias
      • Thrombocytopenia and other cytopenias
  • Haemoglobinopathy Service (Supplementary but Growing Component)
    • Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Support
    • Work with the Local Haemoglobinopathy Team (LHT) to support:
      • Outpatient management of sickle cell disease including Annual Review Clinics
      • Hydroxycarbamide dose monitoring
      • In reach for patients admitted in crisis
    • Contribute to the development of local pathways and quality standards.

Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics or Paediatrics (Paediatric Emergency Medicine) via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview); or CESR. Additional degrees, diplomas or postgraduate thesis relevant to specialty. Sub-speciality haematology/oncology training via GRID or SPIN. Haemoglobinopathy training and experience, including the management of sickle cell disease.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
