Job overview: West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint two substantive Consultants in Gynaecological Oncology. These positions will be based at all our hospital sites. The successful applicants will join the current Gynaecological Oncology team led by Mr Malcolm Padwick. New post holders will receive mentorship support within the division to ensure they are assimilated into their new role. The Gynaecological Oncology service is part of the Women’s and Children’s Division, which also includes Paediatrics and Maternity. The positions will provide specialist Gynaecological Oncology surgical care and Rapid Access Diagnostic support at Watford General Hospital, St Albans City Hospital, with outreach clinics to our units in Luton and Stevenage. Watford General Hospital is a tertiary Gynaecological Cancer Centre supported by three Gynaecological Oncology consultants. Our workload is close to 400 new cancer cases treated every year. Within the department there is extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. The appointees will be expected to further support the development of robotics within the department and help with the increased workload of advanced ovarian cancer cases.

Main duties of the job:

  • Clinical Care: Deliver high-quality patient care in gynaecological oncology. Maintain GMC specialist registration and required competencies. Ensure timely attendance at clinical activities. Involve patients in care decisions and respond to their views.
  • Research, Teaching & Training: Collaborate on research, adhering to governance requirements. Provide high-quality teaching to medical students and healthcare professionals. Act as an educational supervisor and appraiser.
  • Performance & Governance: Drive clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, financial, and operational performance. Review clinical outcomes using benchmarking data and advise on variances. Participate in audits, incident reporting, and NICE compliance. Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines and best practices. Promote infection control and patient safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities: The Trust maintains a robust clinical governance programme, incorporating both multidisciplinary and specialty meetings. A strong emphasis is placed on clinical audit, encouraging all departments, including junior medical staff, to undertake regular audit projects. The postholder is expected to actively engage in departmental and divisional audits. In terms of continued professional development, the appointee is expected to participate in ongoing medical education, with study leave provided for this purpose. They may apply to the Trust Study Leave Committee for financial support. Additionally, the postholder must fully participate in the Trust’s annual consultant appraisal and revalidation scheme while also undertaking clinical and educational supervision for junior staff, including overseeing their appraisals. Regarding on‑call commitment, the Gynaecological Oncology team operates on a 1:4 rota to provide support for post‑operative patients and oncology inpatients, with assistance from a dedicated fellow. He/she will also have completed Specialist Training and be entered on the Specialist Register of the GMC or have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and completed subspecialist training in Gynaecological Oncology within six months of the date of interview.

Person specification: Full GMC registration. On GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interview or eligible for specialist registration. PhD, MD, BSc.
