Job overview

You will lead on bringing to life how we’re delivering the government’s neighbourhood health service, shifting the focus away from simply treating people in hospitals and towards proactive care in local communities involving multiple partners. You’ll raise awareness and support for this joined up approach within the Health Care Partnership and with MPs, councillors, national partners like MacMillan and within the communities themselves. You’ll bring a journalistic approach to finding stories, convincing audiences, and supporting the organization’s communications strategy and brand.

Main duties of the job

  • Support day‑to‑day internal and external communications, building our reputation and telling stories of how we’re improving patient care through staff, partnerships and redevelopment programmes.
  • Build awareness and understanding of our services among key external stakeholders, delivering audience‑focused communications.
  • Develop, execute and optimise multi‑channel email campaigns using e‑marketing platforms (e.g., Dotdigital).
  • Act as chief storyteller, producing and sharing stories that resonate with audiences.
  • Manage reactive and proactive media requests alongside press office colleagues.
  • Execute the HCP communications strategy, ensuring a regular rhythm of high‑quality content for our channels.
  • Develop and evaluate media releases, media relations outreach and social media content.
  • Support video content production and photography, and broader communications campaigns and projects as required.
  • Manage customer journeys, segmentation, automation workflows, and analyse campaign performance.
  • Support VIP visits and opportunities, working across teams to plan event content.
  • Support and deputise for line manager and wider communications team activities as needed.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Communications qualification or equivalent experience and knowledge.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of journalistic writing and story‑telling.
  • Strong working knowledge of digital communications and audience engagement across multiple channels.
  • Knowledge of social media channels and best practice.
  • Knowledge of media, press releases and effective storytelling.
  • Knowledge of reputation management and reactive media enquiry handling.
  • Knowledge of policies around filming patients and children.
  • Understanding of operational environments and industry trends.
  • Understanding of communication mediums and channels, comfortable with written, visual and video.
  • Knowledge of the NHS and social media data analysis.
  • Knowledge of editing software, video capture and photography for different channels.

Experience

  • Experience writing excellent copy for a range of target audiences.
  • Experience delivering engaging stories for social, intranet and media.
  • Experience achieving results aligned with strategic aims.
  • Proven experience planning, implementing and evaluating communication strategies.
