Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic clinical leader to join our Deteriorating Patient Team as the Deteriorating Patient Education Lead. This exciting role will lead the development, delivery and continuous improvement of education and training programmes that support the prevention, recognition, escalation and management of the deteriorating patient across the Trust. You will provide expert leadership in resuscitation practice, simulation training, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for patients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, credible and influential registered healthcare professional with significant experience in acute care, resuscitation and clinical education. The successful candidate will be passionate about developing others, driving innovation and embedding evidence-based practice.

The role is primarily Monday to Friday; however, flexibility is required to support training delivery, simulation programmes and service needs across all Trust sites. Full details will be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job

As the Deteriorating Patient Education Lead, you will lead the development, delivery and evaluation of Trust-wide education and training programmes focused on the recognition, escalation and management of deteriorating patients, including resuscitation and cardiac arrest prevention. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to promote best practice, improve patient safety and support excellent clinical outcomes.

Key responsibilities include leading resuscitation training, simulation-based education, quality improvement initiatives, audits and service development projects, while ensuring compliance with mandatory training standards. You will provide expert clinical resuscitation advice, contribute to incident investigations, support policy development and help shape the Trust's strategic approach to deteriorating patient care.

We are looking for an experienced registered healthcare professional with a strong background in acute care, resuscitation and clinical education. You will have excellent leadership, communication and influencing skills, the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, and a passion for developing staff and improving patient outcomes. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Deteriorating Patient Education Lead will provide operational and professional leadership for deteriorating patient and resuscitation education across the Trust, supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care and improved outcomes for acutely unwell patients. The post holder will lead the design, delivery and evaluation of education programmes, simulation training, audits and quality improvement initiatives, ensuring alignment with national guidance and Trust priorities. They will contribute to policy development, incident reviews, service development and the implementation of patient safety initiatives.

The role works closely with the Associate Director for the Deteriorating Patient, Deteriorating Patient Lead, senior nurses, consultants, resident doctors, allied health professionals, learning and development teams, divisional leaders and corporate teams to support a multidisciplinary approach to patient deterioration and resuscitation practice across all Trust sites.

Core hours are predominantly Monday to Friday, during normal business hours. However, flexibility is required to support training delivery, simulation programmes, service demands and organisational priorities across Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital.

Education and qualifications

• NMC Registered nurse or HCPC registered.
• Evidence of study at Masters level or equivalent experience.
• Advanced Life Support provider qualifications in adults/paediatrics (ALS, EPALS/APLS/PILS/ILS).
• Teaching and mentoring qualification.
• Leadership course or extensive equivalent leadership experience.
• ALS/EPALS Instructor.
• ALERT Train the trainer certificate.
• Advanced communication/coaching course.
• Resuscitation Council UK Generic Instructor Course Director.

Knowledge

• Extensive clinical experience across a range of specialities and acute care.
• Expert knowledge of RCUK, NICE and NHS England guidelines.
• Experience of practice development and quality improvement strategies.
• Proven ability to lead on quality improvement projects.
• Working in an autonomous role / setting.
• Multidisciplinary team working
• Clinical assessment skills.
• Critical analysis of evidence skills

Experience

• Significant experience in the assessment and resuscitation of the deteriorating patient.
• Experience of delivering education across professional boundaries.
• Experience of leading quality assurance programmes including developing robust audit for improvement.
• Experience of presenting complex or contentious information to larger groups.
• Evidence of involvement in policy development and review.
• Experienced in communicating highly complex, sensitive news to patients, family and colleagues.
• Experience in instructing on, and directing, national advanced resuscitation skills programmes.
• Experience of developing/running bespoke training programmes.
