Job overview

An exciting opportunity now exists for a Sickle Cell CNS, Band 7 to join our trust for a secondment until 31st January 2027. We’re looking for someone with interest to join our haematology team that will contribute to the development of the Trust as a clinically led organisation.

You will be working alongside consultants, registrars, senior nurses and have the opportunity to liaise with many healthcare professionals.

The post holder is expected to provide exceptional patient-centred care to sickle cell patients and advocate for carers when necessary. There will be ward-based care, MDT meetings, war rounds and HCC discussions. Experience with Sickle Cell patients is not an Essential Requirement. Some aspects of the Job Description are something the candidates should aspire to, acknowledging will be achieved after spending sometime in post under supervision of the Consultant Haematologist team.

Main duties of the job

The clinical nurse specialists would be expected to facilitate education and continuing professional development for all levels of registered and non-registered nursing staff within the Nursing teams. They are also expected to work in partnership with different divisions to support knowledge and skills training and competencies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

  • Provide timely and effective assessment and triaging of patients presenting with sickle cell crisis, supporting and caring for patients whilst balancing their requirements with the Trust service provision and resources.
  • Provide expert clinical advice, support and guidance for patients, carers and allied healthcare professionals involved in providing care for patients with sickle cell disease.
  • Offer timely and appropriate clinical decision-making and interventions where appropriate and escalate as required.
  • Work closely with haematologists, bed managers, ward managers and nurses to initiate timely admission and discharge planning. Facilitate nurse led discharges.
  • Act as a role model and clinical resource, demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area.
  • Promote good clinical practice in line with evidence-based guidelines and policies.
  • To liaise with relevant A&E staff and other members of the MDT to optimise a smooth treatment pathway for patients in ambulatory care triage.
  • Develop and run nurse led clinics.
  • To contribute to the education of patients about their condition, enabling them to make informed choices.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

  • Registered nurse with active NMC registration
  • Degree in Adult Nursing
  • Adult Health Assessment Module or willingness to complete
  • Masters in Hemoglobinopathies or equivalent.
  • Post-registration qualification in Hemoglobinopathies (or equivalent) with consolidated specialist experience
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake

Knowledge

  • Advanced clinical assessment, reasoning, and decision-making skills, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong understanding and ability to implement national and local guidelines relevant to rheumatology
  • Leadership and management skills, including the ability to supervise, develop, and mentor colleagues and students
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including delivering education to patients, carers, Haematology CNS, medical students, and other supporting staff
  • Effective planning, organisational, and time management abilities.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and judgement skills applied to clinical practice, service development, and audit.
  • Proficient use of computer systems and clinical software.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting Haematology nursing and ability to contribute to audit, and quality improvement initiatives.

Experience

  • Experience in service development, clinical audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Skilled in assessing patients both face-to-face and remotely, providing advice and guidance via telephone or electronic means.
  • Proven post-registration experience working within Haematology services.
  • Be able to demonstrate ability to work autonomously and make independent clinical decisions with sickle cell patients.
