We are seeking an experienced paediatric nurse for the role of Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse within the Children’s Emergency Department. The role involves providing expert clinical leadership in a fast‑paced environment, supporting operational management, acting as a clinical role model, and contributing to nursing practice development. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in paediatric emergency or acute children’s nursing, strong clinical decision‑making skills, and a passion for developing nursing staff.

Main duties of the job:

  • Provide visible clinical leadership and expert nursing care, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and high‑quality care.
  • Support the operational management of the department, including coordinating patient flow, allocating staff, and responding to changing service demands.
  • Lead and support the nursing team during each shift, ensuring safe staffing levels and effective delegation of care.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop registered nurses, nursing associates, healthcare support workers, and student nurses through teaching, coaching, and appraisal.
  • Ensure compliance with national standards, professional guidance, Trust policies, and safeguarding procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless, child‑and family‑centred care.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives, clinical audit, and service development to enhance patient outcomes and experience.
  • Support investigation and learning from incidents, complaints, and patient feedback, embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Promote effective communication with children, young people, families, and colleagues, ensuring compassionate and inclusive care.
  • Maintain clinical competence in paediatric emergency nursing and support implementation of new evidence, guidelines, and innovations into practice.
  • Act as a resource for the wider team, providing specialist advice and supporting escalation of deteriorating patients.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the department’s 24‑hour, 7‑day service, including weekends, nights, and bank holidays.

Person specification:

  • Registered Nurse (Child)
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS/EPALS)
  • Expanded Nursing Practitioner (ENP) course

Knowledge:

  • Experience in mentoring, assessing, and coaching
  • Leadership/management experience leading a team
  • In‑depth knowledge of emergency care targets

Experience:

  • Significant experience at Band 6 in a busy Children’s ED
  • Experience in nursing recruitment
  • Experience in staff management

UK professional registration is required. The role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check is mandatory.
