This post is ideal for someone who wishes to pursue a career in neurology. There will be support and supervision by the consultants, to ensure that competencies are achieved in diagnosis and management of neurological conditions. You will join a team of two other neurology IMT trainees, with cross cover for absence. All ST3+ trainees should attempt to attend and present patients at relevant multidisciplinary team meetings. The successful candidates will be expected to work 09:00am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday and work across all three sites.
Main duties of the job:
- Ensure referrals are seen promptly, discussed with the consultant, and shared between you and the relevant consultants if you get too busy.
- Ensure the online referral system is checked at least twice daily or delegated to a colleague.
- Attend clinics.
- Assist and manage IMT trainee queries.
- Manage clinical fellow clinics.
- Engage in audits to improve the department.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
The Neurology service is delivered at WHHT by an innovative, forward-thinking team of 12 Consultant Neurologists, supported by 1 Nursing lead, 1 Clinical Nurse Specialist and 2 internal medicine trainees (IMT) from the East of England Deanery. The team treats a wide range of neurological conditions, including seizures and headaches. Most treatment of neurology patients takes place across our three sites: Watford General Hospital (WGH), Hemel Hempstead Hospital (HHGH) and St Albans City Hospital (SACH). The department also has a neurophysiology service that provides both inpatient and outpatient care across the WGH and HHGH sites.
Person specification:
Education and qualifications:
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies or equivalent
- Evidence of achievement of CT/ST2 competencies or equivalent
- Intercalated BSc or equivalent
Knowledge:
- At least one year of neurology experience
- NHS experience
- Competence at core-completion level in the management of medical emergencies, in-patients and outpatients
- Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification)
- Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
- Evidence of ST3-level procedural skills relevant to medical patients
Experience:
- Full GMC registration at time of appointment
- Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of training
- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take, during core training or equivalent
- Experience at CT/ST 2 level of managing patients with neurological conditions by the time of commencement of ST3 training
