An ophthalmic technician is required to join the eye service at West Herts Hospitals, working at Watford General Hospital and St Albans City Hospital as part of a multidisciplinary eye team consisting of consultant ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, nurses and health care assistants.
Main responsibilities:
- Carry out visual field assessments.
- Perform laser scanning ophthalmoscopy (optical coherence tomography).
- Conduct visual acuity assessment for ophthalmology clinics.
Qualifications and experience:
- Applicants should have 6‑12 months experience working as an ophthalmic technician with NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualifications.
- Candidates with other relevant scientific or nursing backgrounds may also be considered.
Education and qualifications:
- 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English.
- NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or relevant experience.
- Foundation degree in ophthalmic science and technology or equivalent.
Knowledge and skills:
- Wide experience of technical equipment in ophthalmology.
- Good computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Office Word, Outlook and Excel.
- Experience with photographic equipment, data handling and calibration of ophthalmic equipment.
- Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, as part of a team and independently.
- Adaptable, reliable and punctual.
Experience:
- Substantial experience as an ophthalmic technician in a clinical setting.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary and multi-agency setting.
- Ability to converse knowledgeably about the testing process to ensure patient cooperation and test accuracy.
- Good IT skills and experience of relevant software packages.
Employment details:
- Grade Band 3, permanent contract, full time, 37.5 hours per week, flexible working.
- Salary £27,106 to £28,850 pa, yearly.
