Job Introduction
An opportunity is available for an Operator (Overhead Lines) based at Llanfihangel-ar-arth, Carmarthenshire. As an Operator, you will assist a Craftsperson with the construction, maintenance, replacement, and repair of overhead lines up to and including 33kV. While some electrical experience is preferred, all necessary training will be provided. The role involves working away from the depot, usually in a team of two. You must be able to work safely, quickly, and decisively, and be responsible for ensuring the van is equipped with all essential tools and equipment. The work environment requires physical effort and a flexible approach to working hours, along with a valid driving license.
Applicants should hold English & Math GCSEs (grades 1-9 or G-A*) or equivalent qualifications at the same level, such as Functional Skills. Evidence of qualifications will be required prior to appointment. Note: Roles involving working at height and using Personal Fall Protection Equipment have weight restrictions for individuals.
Main responsibilities
You will work at heights on various overhead lines. Duties include:
- Undertaking deadwork on LV, HV, and EHV systems under supervision
- Operating mechanical equipment
- Inspecting poles and overhead equipment, rectifying minor defects
- Trimming and felling trees
- Excavating, laying cable, and backfilling
- Excavating pole and stay holes
- Delivering planned shutdown notices and making appointments
- Resolving customer complaints where possible
Flexibility and mobility are essential, including standby duties. A valid driving license is required. National Grid is committed to safeguarding, and this role is subject to appropriate screening and vetting, including DBS checks where applicable.
