Working Part Time: 30 hours per week, Monday to Sunday working between the hours of 7.30am - 17:00pm.

An exciting opportunity to work within the Phlebotomy Department. The phlebotomy team provides essential services both within the Trust and the wider health care community. This post includes working within The Countess of Chester Hospital on inpatient wards, outpatient services, as well as clinic settings. We also provide services at the 1829 Building located on The Countess of Chester Hospital Site for GP bloods and offsite locations that include a GP Phlebotomy Hub in Ellesmere Port and ward/outpatient services in Ellesmere Port Hospital. This role includes working at all of the listed locations. The Phlebotomy team covers weekend duties on a rotational basis; therefore flexibility of the successful candidate is essential.

Main duties of the job:

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
  • Collection of samples(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures.
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
  • Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible.
  • Recording collection of blood sample via electronic method.
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies or incidents are reported to a senior member of staff and reported via the Datix incident reporting system.
  • Liaising with laboratory staff.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 5,916 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 411,000.

Person Specification:

Essential Knowledge and Experience:

  • A knowledge of Infection Control Policies/procedures
  • Computer Literate
  • Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively

Desirable:

  • Previous phlebotomy experience
  • Previous experience in the healthcare setting
  • Use of Cerner/EPR

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn phlebotomy techniques
  • Ability to communicate in a polite and courteous manner and able to demonstrate an empathetic nature to patients.
  • Ability to communicate with patients at varying levels of understanding

Essential Qualifications:

  • 5 GCSE's Grade C and above or equivalent including English and Science

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Accredited training course in phlebotomy e.g. geopace
