Knowledge of NC criminal and motor vehicle laws and understanding their application; knowledge of federal laws, particularly those that apply to a higher education institution including FERPA and the Clery Act; knowledge of general court and criminal processes; knowledge of police training practices and crime prevention issues; knowledge of Departmental General Orders; knowledge of investigative techniques; knowledge of the chain-of-custody and processing procedures for evidence; knowledge of safety, crime prevention, and crime mapping principles; skilled in working with a diverse population; skilled in public service contact with a customer orientation; skilled in working in a regimented work environment that requires giving and following orders; skilled in working with computer applications; skilled in working within all facets of University law enforcement; skilled in working with instructional and technical equipment; ability to write legibly and coherently; ability to speak clearly and distinctly over the radio and telephone; ability to communicate effectively with other including public speaking; ability and skill in motor vehicle operation; ability to use physical force to control individuals or defend one\’s self or others; ability to carry or drag a person with a weight range of 125 to 175 lbs; ability to climb through windows or similar size openings; ability to climb up and over obstacles; ability to walk up and down five flights of stairs; ability to crawl in confined areas, e.g., attics, crawl spaces; ability to grip objects tightly; ability to drag or push heavy objects; ability to jump across ditches or culverts; ability to lift heavy objects that weigh 75 or more pounds; ability to carry an adult on a stretcher; ability to pull an adult from a confined space such as the interior of a vehicle; ability to run 110 yards over a variety of terrain; ability to walk continuously for four or more hours; ability to stand continuously for four or more hours; ability to sit continuously for four or more hours; ability to read and comprehend document, polices, directives, and text-based electronic media.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Necessary Special Qualification:
Certification as a Law Enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.

Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment
Graduation from high school.

Successfully complete Field Training Officer Program; good physical condition as evidenced by successfully passing an approved law enforcement physical test; must be 21 years of age; must be a US Citizen or eligible to work in the United States; must successfully pass a background investigation; two years of successful work experience in a public-contact occupation; must be able to work rotating shifts, out-of-doors, and in a variety of assignments including foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrol; must be able to deal with stressful situations, including life-threatening incidents; must not object to using force against another person when legally justified; experience in working with word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Additional desired qualifications include education beyond the minimum and one year of successful law enforcement work experience.

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

Serves as a member of a community policing team that employs problem-solving strategies for addressing crime and safety problems; performs patrol duties including but not limited to responding to calls for service or crimes, investigating violations of law or university rules, preparing written report, enforcing parking and traffic rules, engaging in crowd and traffic control, patrolling and inspecting buildings and facilities for safety or law enforcement concerns, and coordinating with higher authority on special traffic, law enforcement or safety concerns; enters reports into a computer; performs extensive computer work; performs other related duties as assigned.

This position will function at the Contributing Competency Level.
