Overview: Unstructured Data Governance Manager – leading the development of a lightweight, risk-aligned governance framework and AI readiness strategy for the company’s unstructured data assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define & Drive the Governance Framework: Design and implement a practical, right-sized governance approach for unstructured data (documents, wikis, emails, contracts, knowledge bases, video, audio, etc.) that balances rigor with adoptability. Establish policies, standards and guidelines for how unstructured data is created, classified, stored, maintained and retired. Build and evolve a governance operating model that works across decentralized teams and business units.
  • Enable AI Readiness: Partner with Analytics & AI to ensure unstructured data assets are well-curated, traceable and fit for use in GenAI applications, RAG pipelines and knowledge management systems. Identify and work with business domain owners to mitigate risks related to poor data quality, uncontrolled content proliferation and ungoverned AI inputs/outputs. Stay current on GenAI trends and help the organisation understand governance implications of emerging capabilities.
  • Manage Knowledge Assets: Champion knowledge management best practices, including taxonomy development, metadata standards and content lifecycle management. Identify high-value knowledge assets and work with business owners to bring them under appropriate governance. Reduce redundancy, improve discoverability and increase trust in the organisation’s knowledge base.
  • Navigate Privacy & Compliance: Apply working knowledge of data privacy and information governance regulations (e.g. GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA where applicable) to ensure unstructured data handling meets compliance requirements. Partner with Legal/Compliance and IT Security to align governance standards with enterprise risk policies. Help teams understand obligations around sensitive and regulated unstructured content.
  • Influence & Drive Outcomes Across the Business: Build relationships and credibility with stakeholders across departments to drive adoption of governance standards without direct authority. Communicate governance value in business terms – connecting data quality and risk management to outcomes that matter to each team. Establish governance forums, working groups or steward networks to sustain momentum. Report progress against governance objectives to Analytics & AI leadership and relevant executive stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Essential: 5+ years in data governance, knowledge management, information management or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated experience with GenAI or AI/ML initiatives, including understanding how unstructured data fuels and affects AI systems. Strong program and project management skills, with a track record of driving cross-functional outcomes in matrixed organisations. Proven ability to influence without authority – building alignment and accountability across teams that do not report to you. Comfort operating in ambiguous, evolving environments; able to define structure where little exists. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate technical governance concepts for non-technical audiences. A pragmatic mindset – building governance frameworks that are useful and adopted, not just technically correct.
  • Preferred: Experience with data privacy or information privacy compliance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA or similar). Familiarity with knowledge management platforms, enterprise content management systems or RAG/vector search architectures. Experience working within or alongside an Analytics, Data or AI centre of excellence. Relevant certifications (e.g. CDMP, IGQ, CIPP, PMP or similar).

Success Criteria: In the first year, you will assess the current state of unstructured data across the organisation, establish a governance framework with visible business buy-in and make measurable progress on data quality and AI readiness for at least one high-priority knowledge domain. You will be seen as a trusted partner, not a compliance gatekeeper, by the teams you work with.
