We are seeking three Transport Planning Technician Apprentices to join our organisation, with roles based in the Transport Capital Programme Team, the Mass Transit Team, and the Transport Policy Team. These roles offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience across a range of exciting transport workstreams, including the development of a new Mass Transit system for West Yorkshire.

You will be involved in developing forward-thinking strategies and policies aimed at improving connectivity, future mobility, zero-carbon initiatives, and public transport, as well as supporting the delivery of new rail stations, high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure, and multi-modal corridor improvements across the region. As a Transport Planning Technician Apprentice, you will provide technical support across the transport directorates and to partner organisations, playing a vital part in helping the region achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038 through the implementation of regional transport policy priorities.

As part of the apprenticeship, you will study towards a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Transport Planning, delivered on a block-release basis by Leeds College of Building over a two-year period. The entry requirements set by the College are as follows:

  • You must be 16 years old or above by 1 September 2025
  • A minimum of four GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English, Maths, and Science.
  • Be available to start the course on Monday, 20 October 2025

All course fees, travel, accommodation, and subsistence will be fully funded by the Combined Authority. During your studies, you will also have the chance to engage in sport and enrichment activities, and in your second year, participate in a European field trip focused on transport case studies.

Alongside a competitive salary, we offer an excellent benefits package including:

  • 28 days Annual Leave (increasing upon years of service) plus Bank Holidays
  • Generous Employer-Contribution Pension Scheme
  • Free Travel on rail and buses across West Yorkshire with the M-Card (Zones 1-5)
  • Flexible Working Practices with Health & Wellbeing initiatives, including agile working options, as well as a generous flexi-time scheme to ensure you achieve the best work/life balance and career goals.
  • Bright, airy, modern office space, with all latest technology, just a 2-minute walk from Leeds Train Station.

About You

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) including English and Maths
  • Willing to undertake training to become a qualified BTEC Level 3 Transport Planning Technician
  • Experience of effectively contributing to team objectives
