We currently have a vacancy for a Policy Coordinator to join our Place and Environment Policy Team. Following publication of the Phase Two Grenfell Tower Inquiry report in September 2024, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, under the leadership of the Mayor of West Yorkshire, has started to identify how the pace of remediation of buildings in our region can be increased. The combined authority is playing a convening role, bringing together the key stakeholders in West Yorkshire with responsibilities relating to the safety of buildings with dangerous cladding. This new Policy Coordinator role is to support the development and implementation of a partnership Local Remediation Acceleration Plan for West Yorkshire. We are also interested to hear from candidates that may have an interest in the wider activity of the team. The focus of the wider team is policy and programme development to support sustainable growth and resilience across the region. Our activity aims to accelerate delivery and improve the quality of infrastructure and place making activities including planning, transport, housing, employment sites, net zero and energy, climate resilience and environment, and urban design. Our activity supports a cross-boundary and cross-policy approach to infrastructure planning and delivery including the development of a regional planning policy approach (Spatial Development Strategy) anticipated in 2026, seeking opportunities for cost and efficiency savings.

Our Offer
Alongside a competitive salary, we offer an excellent benefits package including:

  • 28 days Annual Leave (increasing upon years of service) plus Bank Holidays.
  • Generous Employer-Contribution Pension Scheme.
  • Free Travel on rail and buses across West Yorkshire with the MCard (Zones 1-5).
  • Flexible Working Practices with Health & Wellbeing initiatives, including agile working options, as well as a generous flexi-time scheme to ensure you achieve the best work/life balance and career goals.
  • Bright, airy, modern office space, with all latest technology, just a 2-minute walk from Leeds Train Station.

The Role
Reporting into the Policy Manager, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Coordination of policies and initiatives through the development of policy proposals, appraising strategy options and co-ordinating projects and initiatives.
  • Provision of project management and technical support to the directorate.
  • Working with a range of partners – e.g. local authorities, key stakeholders, government agencies and private sector organisations.
  • Providing general support to the relevant policy managers on activity related to the team.
  • Ownership of specific areas of work commensurate with the role grade.
  • Supporting the Remediation team – for instance, to design new policies, strategies, programmes and projects, that drive the work relating to building safety and cladding remediation across West Yorkshire including the interventions outlined in the developing West Yorkshire Remediation Acceleration Plan and based on the National Remediation plan.
