About the Role
The Humbleyard Practice are looking to welcome an experienced Healthcare Assistant into our practice to support our nursing team. The role is a full-time position for 37.5 hours per week. It should be noted that Health Care Assistants may be required to treat patients at any of the three practice sites, when required.
Main Duties
- Phlebotomy, for both venous and INR near patient testing
- Blood pressure checks
- Urine testing, urinalysis and submitting samples to the laboratory following the practice protocol
- Obtaining of specimens, ensuring their maintenance under correct conditions and despatch
- Performing ECG’s
- To promote the health and wellbeing of individual patients through:
- Carrying out health interviews for patients newly registered with the practice and others as required
- Making appropriate referrals to doctors and other health and social service professionals
- Assisting in the development of health promotion activities for groups of patients e.g. promotion of a healthy lifestyle through smoking cessation, diet and exercise
- BMI monitoring – weight monitoring and lifestyle advice
- Any other procedures as deemed reasonably within the scope of the post
- Deal with patient queries and problems with referral to doctor if necessary
- Blood sugar measurement
- 24hr BP monitoring and inputting data from home blood pressure monitoring
- Diabetic foot checks
- To be familiar with and comply with the practice’s policies, procedures and current legislation
- To recognise the patient’s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality, showing due regard for the patient’s property
- To prepare consulting rooms and maintain stocks of examination instruments and specimen collection materials, and other clinical supplies, including cleaning of any storage space for the same e.g. clinical trolleys
- Clean clinical equipment in consulting and treatment rooms
- Dispose of and replace sharps boxes
- To ensure that specimens brought in by patients or taken by doctors and nurses are ready for collection by pathology services and are stored correctly whilst awaiting collection
- To assist in the ordering, storing and maintenance of equipment used in the practice, including clinical supplies and non‑clinical supplies
- Prepare equipment for patient consultation where necessary
- Clean and tidy cupboards and work surfaces
- Other duties that may reasonably be required to cover the absence of other phlebotomists
- Undertake any training that may be necessary to carry out duties and responsibilities efficiently or to keep up to date with working patterns and technology

Skills and Qualifications
- Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent
- Ideally a qualification in Phlebotomy/Venepuncture
- Strong clinical skills
- Confidence and competence in all HCA duties required for the post
- Experience within Primary Care and/or Healthcare setting
- Excellent patient‑facing communication and interpersonal skills
- Consistently confidential manner as well as a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues
- Ability to work independently and determine own workload priorities as well as working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
- Strong organisational and time management skills
