About the Role

King Street Surgery inKempston, Bedford are looking to recruit an experienced healthcare assistant to join our team for 4 days a week, working on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week. Hours can be flexible but we would require 2 days to start at 8.30am and 2 days to finish at 6pm.

The HCA will work as part of the nursing team and will always have a member of the nursing team or a doctor to refer to. They will undertake clinical duties within their competence after completion of appropriate training, and will work under clear written protocols, ensuring a safe and effective level of practice.

Main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Dressings and wound care (essential)
  • Diabetes annual reviews part 1
  • Lifestyle management checks (height and weight)
  • Urinalysis
  • Measurement of blood pressure, temperature and pulse
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Phlebotomy (essential)
  • Suture removal/staple removal
  • ECGs
  • Carrying out NHS health checks
  • ENT Swabs
  • Administering injections – B12
  • Immunisations for flu, pneumococcal, shingles
  • Ordering of medical supplies and uniforms for the nursing team
  • Setting up for and assisting GPs with minor surgery, ensuring adherence to practice infection control policy and appropriate record keeping
  • Assisting with any administrative responsibilities which may be appropriately delegated by the practice nurses or the practice manager.

About the Candidate

The healthcare assistant role within general practice can be very different to the role within other settings and as such we are only looking for applications from those with previous primary care experience.

  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent experience.
  • Strong clinical skills.
  • Experience within primary care and/or healthcare setting.
  • Excellent patient-facing communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Consistently confidential manner as well as a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and determine own workload priorities as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
