West of England Combined Authority is seeking a Director of Transport Programmes with a salary range of £105,000 to £123,000, located in Bristol.

About the Role

The Director of Transport Programmes will be responsible for leading a high-impact portfolio of various transport projects, directly contributing to the West England Mayoral Combined Authority’s economic growth and sustainability, ensuring a lasting impact on regional growth. Responsibilities include:

  • Connecting people to opportunity and transforming the way people move around the region.
  • Monitoring programme progress, ensuring timely delivery within budget, and achieving best value for money.
  • Developing robust business cases and prioritising funding for projects that provide significant benefits to the region.
  • Overseeing contract negotiation and management, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Collaborating closely with internal stakeholders and maintaining strong relationships with public sector partners, contractors, and consultants.
  • Leveraging knowledge in industry best practices and remaining informed on advancements in transport and infrastructure.

About You

The ideal candidate will be a highly credible transport leader with experience in a complex, high-profile, multi-stakeholder environment. Key qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated project and programme leadership experience, orchestrating major projects or serving as the Senior Responsible Officer.
  • Sound knowledge of UK and EU Public Procurement Requirements and an understanding of public sector financing and funding.
  • Success in business case presentation and awarding, with the ability to manage multiple pressing priorities.
  • Strong influencing and communication skills to build trusted relationships with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of contract management, risk management, and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring a team to build a high-performing unit.
