The role of the occupational health unit is pivotal in delivering this commitment to achieve and attain a workplace culture where the wellbeing of our people is reflected in all that we do. With that in mind, the in-house Occupational Health and Wellbeing department at West Midlands Police is going through a period of change. The department welcomed a new Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing in December 2024, which has led to some changes. As a result, we have a vacancy in the administration team to support the multi-disciplinary services provided to the Force, which is the second largest in the country with over 7,500 officers and 3,500 police staff.

Based at Tally Ho!, Edgbaston, Birmingham, this role offers some hybrid working to meet service delivery requirements and may require some travel across the West Midlands Police estate.

We are seeking an Occupational Health & Wellbeing Assistant to join our in-house Occupational Health and Wellbeing team. This is a full-time, permanent role, offering a great opportunity for someone looking to start or continue their career in an administrative role to support the service we provide to officers and staff. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, organized, a good communicator, with a positive and flexible approach to work.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team supporting a multi-disciplinary clinical team including Force Medical Advisors, Occupational Health Nurse Advisors, Trauma Therapists, Occupational Health Practice Nurses, and Occupational Health Technicians.

A robust induction plan will be provided to support the successful candidate in the early stages of employment, with opportunities to learn and grow within the Occupational Health & Wellbeing department, contributing to service development, policy, and standards.

Essential

  • Experience of using multiple IT applications, e.g., Office 365.
  • Keyboard skills and ability to transcribe information.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to answer the telephone effectively and courteously.
  • Awareness of office tasks/activities.
  • Understanding of the importance of professional working relationships.
  • Passionate about the wellbeing of others.
  • Organized with a flexible approach to work.
  • Ability to work under pressure with competing demands.
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and a team player.

Desirable

  • Innovative, collaborative, and focused.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in an admin setting.
  • Knowledge of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and rules surrounding access to medical records.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of working in an Occupational Health environment, blue light organization, or other safety-critical industry.

Additional Information

Prospective officers and staff must adhere to high standards of behaviour and accountability, which may involve restrictions on their right to privacy to ensure they are fully aware and accountable for their professional conduct.

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance, including a full background and financial disclosure.

Medical: Appointment depends on passing medical checks, including possible drugs and hearing tests.

Interviews: Scheduled for Wednesday 3rd and Friday 5th September.

Hours: Core hours are Monday to Friday, with some flexibility. Additional hours, including evenings, weekends, or bank holidays, may be required.

Location: Primarily based at Tally Ho!, Edgbaston, Birmingham, with occasional travel within the force area.
