The Traffic Investigation Unit (TIU) is part of the Criminal Justice Services (CJS) department and is responsible for:

  • Road Traffic Collision administration and investigation
  • Third-party allegations of driving standards administration, review, and investigation
  • Police vehicle incidents/accidents and their investigation
  • Central Ticket Office functions

The RTC Team handles the administration and investigation of all damage-only, slight injury, and serious injury road traffic collisions, including those on our motorway network, excluding fatal RTCs or those involving significant life-changing injuries as per policy. All TIU staff are committed to maintaining high-quality service to the public and stakeholders. The position is based at Lloyd House, Birmingham, with working hours from Monday to Friday, totaling 36.5 hours per week.

Specific Role Responsibilities

  • Ensuring reports are correctly recorded in accordance with the Force RTC Policy (CJ/22).
  • Initial review of all RTC reports received by the department as required.
  • Booking weekly workload for NCRF and AODS on Crash and Pentip System.
  • Prompt review of all RTC/A.O.D.S reports to identify and progress investigations.
  • Identifying reports suitable for early resolution as per RTC Policy.
  • Conducting investigations into reports to identify offences.
  • Prioritising reports involving serious injury or vulnerable road users.
  • Making decisions following the TIU decision-making process and CPS charging standards, considering public interest and evidential requirements.
  • Investigating police vehicle incidents and collisions following the full code test.
  • Managing own workload effectively.
  • Liaising with the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, FCIU, Force Traffic, and CMPG where appropriate.
  • Coordinating with LPA/Force investigation teams regarding related crimes.
  • Taking witness statements, conducting interviews, and collecting CCTV as needed.
  • Referring crimes to appropriate departments or LPAs for further investigation.
  • Adhering to contact count policies and updating parties on investigation progress.
  • Responding to victims and witnesses, ensuring compliance with the Victims Code of Practice and Witness Charter.
  • Disclosing information in line with CPS guidelines.
  • Submitting intelligence through IMS.
  • Building files for court proceedings and managing cases for not guilty pleas via paper/Connect.
  • Attending court as required.
  • Being flexible and adaptable to the unit's needs.
  • Handling sensitive/confidential information professionally.
  • Performing other duties related to the department's role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Delivery

  • Knowledge of the Road Traffic Act, RTC Policy, Highway Code.
  • Ability to analyze information and make reasoned decisions on investigations.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience with force IT systems such as CONNECT, PNC, CRASH, Control Works.
  • Minimum PIP Level 1 training or willingness to attain it.

Supervisory Requirements

This is a supervisory grade role with decision-making responsibilities, including directing investigations and determining outcomes with rationale.
