This is to ensure that members of the police are fully aware and accountable for the unique powers entrusted to them and the standards of professional behaviour they swear to uphold.
Police Staff National Firearms Instructors must have previously been authorised firearms officers and have successfully completed a national firearms instructor's course approved by the College of Policing. They must have extensive knowledge and experience in delivering the National Police Firearms Curriculum. We are seeking applications from motivated and enthusiastic individuals who have a background in police firearms training. Applicants are required to be qualified as a nationally trained, police firearms instructor. They must have a sound knowledge and experience in delivering firearms training to authorised police firearms officers, based on the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum. The applicant must have experience in handling and firing a wide range of operational police firearms and be competent in their use. The applicant must also be physically fit and capable of passing the police 15 metre role related fitness test to Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) level -7:6.
In addition, the applicant will be required to prepare, write and deliver lesson plans to AFOs, incorporating the required risk assessments and safety briefs. As a nationally trained police firearms instructor, you will mainly be working on the firing range at Birmingham. There will also be a requirement to work at various other firing ranges and training venues across the West Midlands Police region.
Eligibility- Been continuously resident in the UK for the past 5 years
- Have previously worked as a police firearms instructor within the last 3 years
- Supervise practical exercises and provide constructive feedback to assist students in the learning process.
- Assess students on courses and report difficulties, progress etc. and to maintain discipline and standards in the class.
- Design and structure lessons to meet course objectives.
- Use computers and associated equipment for the preparation and presentation of training material.
- Actively assist in the planning, timetabling and development of courses to meet the needs of the force.
- Assist with the evaluation of courses and any subsequent changes to course content.
- Assist with the identification of training needs within the force with regard to firearms training.
- Maintain a thorough operational knowledge of legislation in respect of police use of firearms.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of police procedures and any relevant legislation in respect of police use of firearms.
- Provide information, advice and assistance, as required, in respect of police use of firearms.
- Review and evaluate weaponry and other firearms equipment.
- Participate in the general upkeep and maintenance of Park Lane Range and other training facilities, examining the same to ensure they are clean, safe and Health and Safety requirements are complied with.
- In the absence of the Armourer ensure all weaponry and ammunition stored in WMP facilities are correctly audited and stock levels are maintained.
- In the absence of the Armourer carry out maintenance and repairs to all weaponry, commensurate with training qualifications.
- To promote and comply with WMP's policies on health and safety both in the delivery of services and the treatment of others.
- Comply with and promote equality legislation and WMP's policies on diversity and equality.
- Take steps to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
- To fully participate in WMP's conversations.
- To comply with the requirements of WMP's policies on Drug and Alcohol testing.
- All staff and officers must adhere to and comply with Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Human Rights legislation and the Authorised Professional Practice (Information Management).
- To carry out such other duties which are consistent with the nature, responsibilities and grading of the post.
- Nationally trained Police Firearms Instructor (within last 3 years)
- Authorised Police Firearms Officer (within last 3 years)
- Sound knowledge of the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC)
- PTLLS level 3 qualification or equivalent
- A1 or TAQA Assessor qualified
- Hold a current accredited teaching qualification
- IOSH / NEBOSH trained
- Has a good working knowledge of JML Chronicle Firearms Training and Armoury systems
- Has been trained as a Police driver
- Good knowledge of computers; specifically Microsoft Office programmes
- Uses IT skills to plan and organise training and plan staff postings
- Must be capable of passing NPCC fitness test (bleep test) to level- 7.6
- Must pass WMP vetting
- Is able to produce comprehensive written reports
- Has good communication skills
- Has extensive knowledge of police weaponry

VettingSuccessful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
