At Midland Metro Limited (MML), we are proud to operate and maintain the West Midlands Metro, providing a safe, reliable, and sustainable tram service across the region. Our Infrastructure team plays a vital role in ensuring the network remains safe, efficient, and welcoming for all passengers. Our Rolling Stock team plays a critical role in keeping the network moving, and we are now looking for a proactive, hands-on Maintenance Team Leader to help us deliver world-class fleet performance every single day.
As Maintenance Team Leader, you will be at the heart of our depot operations leading, coaching and motivating a team of skilled Maintenance Technicians to deliver high-quality maintenance, repair and overhaul across our tram fleet. You will champion safety, drive continuous improvement, and ensure the right number of vehicles are available for service each day. This is a role for someone who thrives on responsibility, enjoys solving technical challenges, and takes pride in developing others.
As our Maintenance Team Leader, you will:
- Lead, support and coach a team of Maintenance Technicians, setting high standards for safety, quality and right-first-time work.
- Deliver daily briefings, communicate KPIs and manage performance through regular reviews.
- Plan and allocate maintenance tasks (PPM and reactive) using AMIS, ensuring work is completed on time and to required standards.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, including materials used and diagnostic findings.
- Work closely with technical and reliability teams to maximise daily fleet availability.
- Champion safe working practices, correct PPE use and strong workshop housekeeping.
- Support the Safety Management System and act as a competent authority to declare trams fit for service.
- Carry out hands-on maintenance, fault-finding and repairs across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Respond to in-service failures to minimise disruption to the network.
- Liaise with Stores to ensure parts and materials are available and processed correctly.
- Maintain team competency records and complete required training and assessments.
About You
You will be an experienced engineering professional with strong leadership capability and a passion for safety and reliability. You take ownership, stay calm under pressure, and enjoy helping others deliver their best work.
In order to be successful in this role you will need:
- Proven experience leading, managing or coaching technical engineering teams.
- Experience performing preventative and corrective maintenance on high-value, safety-critical equipment.
- Experience in a 24/7 operational or production environment.
- Fleet/workload planning experience.
- NVQ Level 3 or higher in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or time-served apprenticeship.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate computer/paper records.
- Strong safety awareness from work in safety-critical environments.
- Knowledge of relevant Railway, Light Rail, GB and EN rules and regulations.
- Reliable, trustworthy, positive and professional.
- Full UK Driving Licence (held for at least 1 year).
- Ability to pass a medical assessment and drugs/alcohol screening.
It would be great if you had:
- Experience in rolling stock maintenance.
- NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.
