At Midland Metro Limited (MML), we are proud to operate and maintain the West Midlands Metro, providing a safe, reliable, and sustainable tram service across the region. We are now recruiting for an experienced Engineering Technical Manager to provide authoritative technical leadership across Infrastructure and Rolling Stock systems on the West Midlands Metro network.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical authority across all engineering disciplines, ensuring consistent, compliant and risk-informed engineering decisions
  • Lead investigation and resolution of complex, recurring and system-level faults using structured root cause analysis
  • Develop, maintain and govern engineering standards, specifications and lifecycle strategies aligned to ISO 55001
  • Provide technical assurance across maintenance, projects and contractor activities, including RAMS, methodologies and engineering proposals
  • Support production teams with technical direction while enabling long-term capability through knowledge transfer
  • Provide technical input to procurement, ensuring engineering requirements are clearly and appropriately defined
  • Support asset lifecycle planning, renewal strategies and engineering justification for investment decisions
  • Support capital projects through design reviews, constructability input and system integration assurance
  • Lead engineering change control, ensuring risks and impacts are assessed, approved and documented
  • Analyse fault trends and performance data to drive reliability and preventative engineering improvements
  • Act as the technical interface with TfWM, contractors, suppliers and OEMs, supporting negotiations and resolution of technical issues
  • Maintain engineering documentation, standards libraries and auditable decision records
  • Provide functional leadership to technical specialists and act as deputy to the Head of Engineering
  • Participate in on-call arrangements as required

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in engineering roles within rail, infrastructure or complex asset environments
  • Proven technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering systems
  • Strong experience in fault investigation, root cause analysis and reliability engineering
  • Strong understanding of asset lifecycle management and ISO 55001 principles
  • Experience developing engineering standards and technical specifications
  • Engineering Degree
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualification
  • Excellent technical communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capability
  • High standards of technical integrity, governance and professional judgement
  • Able to operate effectively at both strategic and operational levels
  • Proactive, resilient and solution-focused
  • Full UK driving licence
