An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Head Teacher to join the team at Toronto Primary School and ELC. Toronto Primary School’s vision is to create an inclusive school community which values pupil participation and achievement, and nurtures life-long learners. “Together we Succeed” reflects the school’s commitment to providing motivating and aspirational learning experiences of the highest quality for every child, within a culture of mutual respect. The school’s core values of Included, Respected and Responsible play a central role in shaping its ethos.

Toronto Primary School and ELC is a non-denominational school serving the Howden area of Livingston and is part of the Inveralmond Cluster. The school roll for session 2025-26 is currently 236 pupils, organised across 10 classes with 50 children within the ELC. In addition to the Class Teachers, the management structure consists of a Head Teacher, 1 Depute Head Teacher (0.5 FTE) and 2 Principal Teachers (Acting). The school is supported by a team of Pupil Support Workers that work across the school. The ELC staffing includes; 1 Early Years Officer, 6 Early Years Practitioners and 1 PSW.

The school has a strong community ethos and benefits from a supportive and proactive Parent Council. The Parent Council works in close partnership with the school and is committed to improving the work and life of the school as well as organising fundraising events throughout the school year.

After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:

  • People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
  • People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.
  • A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate. The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is ÂŁ59 or Existing Member is ÂŁ18. The ÂŁ59 cost (where appropriate) will be deducted from your salary over a 1 or 3-month period by repayment schedule. If your employment concludes before the amount is re-paid in full, the outstanding balance will be deducted from your final salary.

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.
