Working under the supervision and direction of the Practice Nurses and General Practitioners, the Healthcare Assistant (HCA) will support the delivery of safe, effective and high‑quality patient care within General Practice.

The post‑holder will undertake a range of clinical, administrative and health promotion duties, working within their level of competence, training and Practice protocols.

The Healthcare Assistant will contribute towards preventative healthcare, chronic disease management, patient education and the achievement of Practice and Primary Care Network objectives.

The post‑holder will be expected to work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical Duties
  • NHS Health Checks.
  • Blood Pressure monitoring.
  • Height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements.
  • Smoking cessation advice and support.
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing assessments.
  • Diagnostic and Investigative Procedures
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs).
  • Peak flow measurements.
  • Pulse oximetry.
  • Urinalysis.
  • Point of Care Testing, where appropriate.
  • Long-Term Condition Support
  • Diabetic foot checks.
  • Support with chronic disease management clinics.
  • Collection of clinical information for disease monitoring.
  • Patient recalls and follow‑up activities.
  • Health promotion and self‑management support.
  • Treatment Room Duties
  • B12 injections following training and competency assessment.
  • Clip and suture removal.
  • Simple wound care and dressings.
  • Assisting clinicians during minor surgery and clinical procedures.
  • Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and wellbeing.
  • Vaccinations and Immunisations
  • Administration of vaccines under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD).
  • Participation in national and local immunisation campaigns.

West Leeds Family Practice is situated across 3 sites in Pudsey, Calverley and Bramley.

We have 20k patients, and are very committed to education and development.

The post holder will work as part of the nursing team which comprises a mix of Registered Nurses and HCAs.

Job responsibilities

Applicants should have experience of working in a GP surgery and be qualified health care assistants.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to NVQ level 2 in health and social care.
  • Experienced in phlebotomy and long‑term condition management.
  • Experience of systm One.
