The West Ham United Foundation, in partnership with the University of East London (UEL), is looking for an inspiring Higher Education Lecturer to deliver on our BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching & Performance degree.

This exciting role combines academic teaching with applied sport, helping students develop the knowledge, skills and experience needed for successful careers in coaching and performance.

Reporting to the HE Programme Manager, you will deliver engaging learning, support student success and embed real‑world practice throughout the programme.

We welcome applicants with expertise in areas including sports coaching and coach development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, talent identification and player development, skill acquisition, sports psychology, applied sport science, coach education, research methods, leadership and management, athlete development pathways, performance lifestyle and the use of technology to enhance coaching and performance.

Experience in professional sport, higher education or elite performance environments is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching & Learning
  • Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars and practical workshops.
  • Design engaging teaching materials and assessments aligned to academic and industry standards.
  • Provide tutorials, feedback and one-to-one academic support.
  • Review and develop module content to ensure quality and relevance.
  • Student Experience
  • Build positive, inclusive relationships with students.
  • Monitor engagement, progress and achievement, providing academic and pastoral support.
  • Promote placements, coaching opportunities and professional development.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Professional Practice
  • Maintain current knowledge of research and best practice.
  • Undertake relevant CPD and maintain professional memberships where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with WHUF and UEL colleagues.
  • Support Open Days, outreach and taster sessions.
  • Ensure safeguarding, health & safety and quality standards are met.

Qualifications

About You

  • Postgraduate qualification in Sports Coaching, Sport Science or a related discipline.
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards HEA Fellowship.
  • Safeguarding and First Aid certification.

Experience

  • Teaching within Higher or Further Education.
  • Designing and delivering engaging, inclusive learning.
  • Practical experience within sports coaching or performance environments.
  • Working with diverse communities.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to engage and inspire learners in groups and one-to-one.
  • Strong planning, organisation and time management.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Resilient, professional and student-focused.
  • Confident using data to inform teaching and measure impact.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office, Moodle and online learning platforms.
  • Current subject expertise with an understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion and health & safety.
