At Avanti West Coast, we’re passionate about transforming the customer experience and setting new standards for operational excellence. We’re looking for experienced, safety-conscious, and customer-focused professionals to join our team at the Preston Depot as Qualified Train Drivers.
This is more than just a job, it’s a dynamic and rewarding journey. With over 500,000 customers travelling on our network each week, our Drivers play a vital role in delivering high-speed journeys that are safe, smooth and enjoyable, reaching speeds of up to 125mph.
As a Train Driver for Avanti West Coast, you will:
- Take command of our trains with confidence, delivering journeys that meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and professionalism.
- Lead with safety by following all operational protocols, including alcohol and drug policies, and maintaining impeccable uniform standards.
- Be the face of Avanti, offering a warm, approachable presence both on board and on the platform, making every customer feel welcome.
- Stay cool under pressure, responding swiftly and effectively to faults or emergencies with calm leadership.
- Speak up for safety, reporting concerns quickly and accurately to keep our network running smoothly.
- Stay sharp and informed, keeping your knowledge up to date on routes, traction, and operational changes to ensure every journey is seamless.
- Minimum 3 years’ mainline driving experience
- A rock-solid commitment to safety and precision.
- The ability to make cool-headed decisions under pressure
- A proactive, team-oriented mindset.

Salary Details
- £59,378 per annum (experienced Driver without core routes & traction)
- Rising to £65,808 per annum (fully qualified Driver with core routes and traction)
- Incremental increases in line with Driver terms and conditions, up to a maximum of £77,566 per annum after 2 years.
- Railway pension scheme
- Free travel on Avanti West Coast for you/spouse/partner/dependents
- Privilege Travel card (75% off other train operators fares for leisure travel)
- 30 days holiday rising by 1 for every completed year of service to a maximum of 37 days (inclusive of bank holidays)
- 10 free journeys on other First Group Train Operator
