Reporting directly to the Mechanical Team Manager, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for fault diagnosis, effective planning, management and delivery of engineering and maintenance solutions to CCGT on Mechanical systems to meet site and Business targets and to deliver continuous improvement in plant reliability, availability and efficiency whilst minimising cost. This includes the appropriate scoping and organising of the delivery of associated works.
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for identifying opportunities to improve all aspects of Mechanical plant performance. They will lead and implement Mechanical plant modifications and engineering improvements either individually or through teamwork with other station staff.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements and support, contribute, and maintain the health, safety and welfare of self and others.
- To develop, implement and execute station engineering, operational and maintenance strategies and procedures.
- Responsible for ensuring that the design and condition of Mechanical Assets and systems do not present a risk to the environment.
- To identify and engineer out, where justifiable, design constraints to enable the station to deliver safe, reliable and efficient commercial operation.
- To develop, manage and maintain the necessary tools for predictive and preventative maintenance techniques to refine and optimise O&M strategies.
- To assist the team in fault diagnosis using techniques such as ‘root cause analysis’ to identify plant issues and expedite the resolution of the problems.
- To maintain logs, manuals, records, blueprints and operating procedures professionally. Provide written reports on Mechanical Assets and system conditions when required.
- To understand and contribute to the commercial/financial aspect of the business and proactively develop operating and maintenance strategies to optimise plant performance regardless of the commercial strategy for the plant.
- To develop, operate and utilise Quality plans to ensure that activities related to plant inspection and maintenance activities, including defect repair and rectifications, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance inspections and plant modifications and engineering improvements, are performed to avoid incidents or loss.
- To produce contract specifications, evaluate and award contracts in line with site policy.
- To network internally and externally to the station to identify best practices and to develop and maintain the O&M Strategies for the asset, including all auxiliaries, management tools and systems.
- To understand and maintain business systems to ensure compliance and manage risk.
- Organise resources and/or contract as required to facilitate emergency plant repairs.
- Challenge current thinking and processes to seek alternative methods to continuously improve standards.
- Direct supervision of multi-skilled craft persons and contractors where appropriate. Responsible for managing staff and contractors to avoid and minimise Health and Safety accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Development and management of procedures, documentation and drawings in line with the Integrated Business Management System.
- Responsible for ensuring that the design and condition of Mechanical Assets and systems do not present a risk to the health and safety of people employed at West Burton CCGT.
- Responsible for continuously improving health & safety performance through monitoring, measurement and management review, and the application of the corrective action process.
- To participate in the audit, review and maintenance of the station's Business Management System to ensure that the station's accreditation to OHSAS18001 is maintained.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Experience of a full range of duties in Mechanical maintenance in an industrial environment.
- Experience in producing technical specifications and management of routine service/maintenance contracts, applying supply chain principles and best practice and maintaining a high level of integrity and commercial confidentiality.
- Competent in budget development and management.
- A comprehensive knowledge of Asset Management techniques.
- A full understanding of relevant engineering policies and procedures.
- IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.
- Understands and implements legal and corporate requirements of managing safely.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality requirements involving the use of contractors.
- Ability to plan and prioritise appropriately and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and people management & development skills.
- Possess or be working towards and obtaining a recognised relevant Engineering qualification.
- Be capable of managing major work programmes, contracts and contractors, resources and budgets.
- Strong organisational, communication, interpersonal and IT skills to be able to work effectively with both internal and external personnel, to ensure that all business objectives are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Qualifications & Experience:
- The Mechanical Engineer should have a sound maintenance/engineering background and possess an appropriate technical qualification (minimum of a Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent) and have proven experience in the maintenance of power generation plants or large rotating machinery.
- To have a proven knowledge, experience and ability of maintenance and engineering of Mechanical Plant equipment.
