Our in-house Environment and Planning Services team provides a wide range of services to facilitate project delivery for engineering, construction and operational projects.

Our focus is to ensure legal compliance and environmental best practices are followed and that current legislation and our environmental policy are met in the development and maintenance of assets.

What you’ll do

In this varied role, you will:

  1. Undertake programmed visits to construction sites and depots to provide environmental support and guidance to staff.
  2. Find pragmatic solutions to environmental constraints to facilitate construction projects while protecting the environment.
  3. Undertake reviews of the environmental performance of sites and depots to ensure compliance with legislation and procedures.
  4. Undertake site visits to review environmental incidents, near-miss events and observations.
  5. Provide advice and assistance and complete investigations into causes, preventative measures and lessons learned.
  6. Attend meetings and other forums to advise on site-based environmental issues, mitigation and strategies such as pollution prevention.
  7. Carry out reviews in relation to site environmental processes and procedures and produce environmental updates as required for communication to the business.
  8. Collaborate with a variety of internal teams such as Environmental, Construction Site Managers and Health and Safety Partners on construction projects.
  9. Prepare reports as required following all site visits, inspections and investigations, using incident/audit software.
  10. Share learnings across projects and business areas and contribute to the continuous improvement of the business.
  11. Drive environmental best practice in line with the ISO14001 certified environmental management system.
  12. Support environmental initiatives and educate construction sites about pertinent environmental issues through site-based environmental training and toolbox talks.
  13. Participate in delivering the environmental training programme.
  14. Provide site support to external accrediting bodies when carrying out ISO14001 audits.

What you’ll need

In this role, we are looking for:

  1. Experience in an environmental advisory role.
  2. Experience of conducting environmental inspections and audits.
  3. Experience in environmental legal knowledge and its practical application.
  4. Experience of construction sites and health and safety practices on construction sites.
  5. Experience in pollution prevention.
  6. Competence in incident investigation.
  7. The ability to influence and promote a positive environmental culture at all levels.
  8. Professional approach.
  9. Team player, who can build and maintain professional relationships.
  10. Self-motivated and ability to plan day-to-day activities.
  11. High level of organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and initiatives.
  12. Well-organised and focused.
  13. IT and report writing skills.
  14. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to talk and listen to others in a professional, constructive and pragmatic manner.
  15. Full driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to sites within the Wessex Water region.

You will also have:

  1. Knowledge of UK environmental management legislation and policy.
  2. A good understanding of ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  3. A degree in Environmental Science/Management, or another similar related subject, e.g., geography (preferred but not essential).
  4. Good working knowledge of environmental good practices during construction, including pollution prevention planning and a general understanding of construction practices.
