Job Description:

Are you looking for an exciting new opportunity? Would you like the satisfaction of helping secure water supplies across the south west? Do you have proven experience in environmental impact assessment (EIA) for infrastructure developments? If so, we have a great opportunity for you to join our team, helping to deliver crucial upgrades in drinking water across our region.

You will be working for West Country Water and Environment on behalf of Wessex Water (employer) on three major new water supply schemes. The role will be based in Bath with hybrid and flexible working arrangements available.

What you\’ll do

You will be joining a team of passionate and motivated people, delivering our Regional Strategic Options in Cheddar, Poole and the Mendip Quarries. These are key projects to enable us to secure sustainable drinking water while ensuring protection of the environment. Further information on the programme is available on the website.

Your tasks will include:

  • Providing advice on project design, the statutory EIA process, and subsequent applications for development consent.
  • Advising on proposed surveys to be carried out by specialists and reviewing reports.
  • Consulting on schemes at public meetings, workshops, and presenting to parties such as Ofwat.
  • Applying your excellent organisation and time management skills, and helping to solve problems when issues arise.
  • Working with the wider Wessex Water team of Environment and Planning Advisers as required.

Site visits in the south west will be part of the role, requiring driving and outdoor work in varying terrain. Weekly meetings will be held at the offices in Bath.

What you\’ll need

In this role, we are looking for:

  • Several years\’ experience applying EIA regulations and mitigation to high-quality schemes, maintaining project delivery.
  • Ability to liaise with a multi-disciplinary consent team (archaeologists, civil engineers, landscape specialists).
  • Experience in planning and environmental assessment for Development Consent Orders or Town and Country Planning schemes.
  • Negotiation and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  • A UK driving licence with a vehicle for business use (mileage paid).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Motivation, curiosity, problem-solving ability, and collaborative working skills.
  • A degree or masters in planning or environmental sciences, or equivalent experience, with membership of a professional institute.
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain and ISO14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Understanding of the water industry and construction techniques, especially for linear schemes like pipelines.
