Would you be keen to work with external companies in regulating their industrial wastewater discharge?

If so, we have a great opportunity for you to join our Trade Effluent team, as a Trade Effluent Officer, covering the Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire border area.

Please note, as part of this role you will be required to attend our Headquarters based in Bath, once a week.

What you'll do Our team works with hundreds of businesses to ensure their industrial wastewater meets regulatory standards before entering our sewer network.

This critical work protects our infrastructure and the environment.

Your role will be instrumental in managing relationships with 200+ businesses in our southern region, issuing consents and managing breaches under the provisions of the Water Industry Act 1991.

  • deal with a variety of industries and sectors, from aviation and food manufacturing to breweries and chemical manufacturers
  • negotiate solutions to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including developing formal action plans with businesses in breach of consent
  • visit and build relationships with businesses discharging in the Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire border area.
  • manage enforcement action in the event of permit breaches, liaising with our Legal team to gather evidence and building robust cases for potential legal proceedings
  • assess risk and issue permits for industrial wastewater discharges
  • lead and support investigations for illegal discharges and incidents
  • collaborate with multiple teams and disciplines across Wessex Water.

Ideally, you will have a degree qualification or equivalent in a science or engineering-based subject.

Preferably, you will understand wastewater treatment or industrial production processes, excellent communication skills to build relationships with businesses and explain technical/legal requirements clearly

  • to be accurate and have a good attention to detail, as you will be analysing data
  • good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • to enjoy working in a team environment
  • to be able to work independently and take ownership of multiple projects
  • a full driving licence as you will make site visits and attend meetings at external companies.

Experience liaising with customers and/or applying environmental legislation would be an advantage, although training will be provided.
