Do you have experience in managing and maintaining water quality monitors and an interest in the environment? Do you have experience in investigating complex water quality problems? Would you like to work across the Wessex Water region surveying, installing, and maintaining riverside water quality monitoring sites? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Smart Rivers team as an Environmental Technician.
What you\’ll do

  • Reporting to the Senior Environmental Technician in the Smart Rivers team, you will support the delivery of an exciting new programme that requires the installation of circa 2000 continuous water quality monitoring (CWQM) sites across our region as part of the Smart Rivers Team
  • Working with geospatial tools, you will identify suitable sites for CWQM installations. You will identify and contact landowners and relevant stakeholders to arrange access and complete site surveys. You will locate, design and specify CWQM sites; working closely with our ecology, planning, estates, GIS, and construction teams as well as external stakeholders to provide technical expertise on the installation and ongoing maintenance of CWQM sites
  • You will help to source and deploy CWQM equipment. You will be responsible for maintaining the equipment in the field, this will include calibrating scientific equipment in a lab environment.
  • You will produce drawings and technical reports to support the planning and permits required for the CWQM installations. Using your knowledge and collected data to develop GIS data sets and build a picture of catchment water quality
  • You will assist with water quality surveys using our remote controlled \”surfboard\” and interpreting the data to understand optimal monitor placement
  • Your investigation skills will help answer questions about the data being received by the CWQM sites. You will assist our operational and catchment teams in investigating potential pollutions, collecting and reporting data that will assist in making effective decisions that lead to positive environmental and stakeholder outcomes
  • You will help identify and develop creative ways to automate or improve efficiency
  • The role will require engagement with other departments to ensure we identify and maximise potential synergies with existing projects and the available data sources
  • This will mostly be a field-based role with 1-2 days of office/home-based work each week.

What you\’ll need

  • Experience using ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey 123, but not essential
  • Experience of measuring water quality, and calibrating scientific equipment. This is not essential, but you need to be technology savvy
  • Experience of collecting and reporting large environmental data sets
  • Knowledge of how sewerage networks and water recycling centres operate
  • You will be able to plan your workload and work efficiently alone and as part of the Smart Rivers team
  • Full driving licence, and the ability to swim
  • The ability to communicate technical information to all levels
  • Proficiency in a range of Microsoft packages
  • An understanding of environmental issues relating to the abstraction and discharge of water and water pollution, but this is not essential
  • An understanding of conservation and other environmental legislation, but this is not essential
  • A basic understanding of catchment hydrology or integrated water/catchment management.
