The Respiratory and General Practice Nurse will provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care within Burgess Road Surgery. The post holder will lead and support respiratory services within the practice, including the management of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while also contributing to the wider treatment room and chronic disease management services.

The role involves working autonomously within professional competence while collaborating closely with GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Healthcare Assistants and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care. The post holder will support the practice in achieving national and local targets including Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) indicators and will contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of respiratory and treatment room services.

Key Responsibilities

Respiratory Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver nurse-led asthma and COPD clinics in line with NICE guidelines and local ICB policies.
  • Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments, including history taking, symptom assessment and inhaler technique review.
  • Perform and interpret spirometry testing in accordance with ARTP standards (or work towards accreditation).
  • Undertake FeNO testing where available and appropriately trained.
  • Support the early identification and diagnosis of respiratory disease.
  • Develop and implement individualised patient management plans.
  • Optimise inhaler therapy and medication adherence.
  • Provide self-management education and personalised asthma action plans.
  • Support smoking cessation and refer patients to appropriate services.
  • Monitor and manage patients with stable chronic respiratory conditions.
  • Contribute to the achievement and monitoring of QOF respiratory indicators.
  • Liaise with secondary care and community services where appropriate.

Treatment Room and General Practice Nursing Duties

  • Provide a full range of general practice nursing services including:
  • Wound management including simple and complex dressings.
  • Removal of sutures and clips.
  • Recording and basic interpretation of ECGs.
  • Performing cervical cytology (smear tests) in line with national screening guidance.
  • Administration of childhood and adult immunisations.
  • Delivery of travel vaccinations where trained.
  • Participation in chronic disease management clinics including hypertension and diabetes support.
  • Delivery of NHS Health Checks and cardiovascular risk assessments.
  • Blood pressure monitoring and lifestyle advice.
  • Phlebotomy where required.
  • Contraceptive advice and administration where trained.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical documentation within the electronic patient record system.
