The role:

  • Your expertise will support the delivery of complex marine engineering work, making a direct contribution to national security and fleet availability.
  • You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity, safety and performance of welding activity across some of the UK’s most significant defence engineering programmes.
  • Produce welding‑related quality documentation, including Weld Information Sheets and method statements.
  • Review welding and non‑destructive testing (NDT) quality packs before final acceptance.
  • Identify the most appropriate welding and weld‑repair methods that balance quality, productivity and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with Babcock’s Quality Management System and BS EN ISO 3834‑2 through ongoing surveillance.
  • Conduct visual inspections pre‑, during and post‑weld, liaising with front‑line managers, project engineers, clients and representatives.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience:

  • Strong knowledge of welding processes and techniques, particularly across submarine and surface ship structural and pipe systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, welding joints and symbols.
  • Understanding of welding and material issues encountered across vessels and marine facilities.
  • Awareness of BS EN ISO 3834‑2 and the importance of welding quality control.
  • Strong communication and computer literacy skills.

Qualifications:

  • Craft Apprenticeship or City & Guilds in Fabrication/Engineering, or equivalent (evidence required).

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
