Overview: Shape the Future of the UK’s Submarine Capability.

The Role: As a Submarine Waterfront Representative (Platform Mechanical), you’ll act as a conduit between the submarine waterfront, maintenance environments, and the shipbuilders designing the UK’s future submarine fleet. Your insight will embed supportability and maintainability into design decisions from the earliest stages. The role allows you to influence long‑term engineering outcomes, reduce through‑life costs and improve submarine availability, working with senior stakeholders across industry, defence and engineering.

Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert waterfront insight into submarine design to ensure future platforms are maintainable, supportable and safe.
  • Influence design decisions by identifying risks and opportunities affecting through‑life support and availability.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including shipbuilders, OEMs and customers.
  • Contribute to supportability assessments, applying operational experience across multiple systems and disciplines.
  • Support programme‑level decision making through clear communication and evidence‑based engineering input.

Additional Information: The role is full time (35 hours per week) and based at any of our main Devonport locations including Plymouth, Bristol, Cumbria, Leicester or Clyde. Hybrid working patterns are available, with a minimum of working 2 days on site.

Essential Experience:

  • Substantial submarine waterfront experience across multiple maintenance or delivery programmes.
  • Strong understanding of submarine systems support, deep maintenance or commissioning environments.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience influencing design or engineering decisions using operational insight.
  • Confidence engaging with industrial partners, shipbuilders or defence stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • HND, Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline, or comparable experience.
  • Additional vocational or professional engineering qualifications would be advantageous.

Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be a sole UK National able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. National security clearance and Trade Control restrictions may affect eligibility based on place of birth, nationality, citizenship, residency or any residency held.
