The Major Repair Specialist is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective repair, overhaul and restoration of generators and associated power equipment that has been designated as requiring major repair. The role plays a crucial part in ensuring equipment is returned to operational condition in line with company engineering standards, quality expectations and agreed repair timescales. The successful candidate will possess strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health, Safety, Environment & Quality
    • Promote and actively support Wernick Group SHEQ standards at all times.
    • Complete weekly safety observations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Adhere to all health and safety policies, procedures and safe working practices.
    • Ensure mandatory PPE requirements are always followed.
    • Support internal audits and maintain engineering areas in a safe and compliant condition.
  • Equipment Repair & Overhaul
    • Carry out major repairs, rebuilds and overhauls on diesel and gas generator sets.
    • Strip, inspect and assess engines, alternators and associated components for repair or replacement.
    • Reassemble equipment to manufacturer and company standards.
    • Complete refurbishment activities on power generation equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
    • Undertake repairs to mechanical, electrical and electronic systems as required.
  • Testing & Commissioning
    • Carry out load bank testing following repairs and overhauls.
    • Complete functional testing and commissioning activities to verify equipment performance.
    • Ensure repaired assets meet operational, safety and quality requirements before release.
    • Support investigations into repeat failures and implement preventative measures where appropriate.
  • Documentation & Administration
    • Produce repair reports and inspection records.
    • Prepare detailed parts lists and supporting documentation for recharge purposes.
    • Accurately complete job sheets, service records and maintenance documentation.
    • Ensure all transactional and administrative elements of the role are managed effectively and in a timely manner.

Essential Criteria:

  • A full UK driving license
  • Proven experience repairing and maintaining diesel-powered equipment or generators.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
  • Experience diagnosing engine, alternator and control system faults.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams and service manuals.
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements within an engineering environment.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desired Criteria:

  • Previous experience working on large industrial generators.
  • Experience carrying out major engine rebuilds.
  • Electrical qualification or engineering apprenticeship.
  • ECS, CSCS or related industry certification.
