Wentworth is a leading civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering consultancy, providing design and checking services across all built environment sectors and industries. Established in 1999, we’ve established a track record for our imagination, innovation, and high level of technical expertise, and we are recognised as one of the leading temporary works and geotechnical design consultancies in the UK.
The Senior Engineer provides technical leadership in ground engineering, with a particular focus on the design and delivery of piling and deep foundation solutions. Working within a consultancy environment and closely alongside contractors and project teams, the role involves developing safe, buildable, and efficient ground engineering designs, managing geotechnical risk, and supporting projects through design development and construction interfaces.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the design of piling systems and foundations, including bored, CFA, and specialist piles, in accordance with Eurocodes, British Standards, and industry guidance.
- Undertake and review ground engineering assessments, including interpretation of ground investigation data, ground models, and derivation of geotechnical parameters.
- Design and review associated ground engineering elements such as working platforms (input and verification), bearing foundations, and earthworks interfaces.
- Establish clear design methodologies, assumptions, and limitations that reflect ground conditions and proposed construction methods.
- Work closely with contractors and specialist subcontractors to ensure designs are practical, coordinated, and aligned with construction methodologies.
- Review contractor proposals, alternative foundation solutions, and value engineering options, providing robust and independent technical advice.
- Manage assigned ground engineering work packages, including scope definition, programme planning, and technical delivery.
- Identify, assess, and communicate geotechnical and construction risks, proposing appropriate mitigation measures and escalation where required.
- Check and review ground engineering and pile designs produced by other engineers, ensuring compliance, clarity, and technical robustness.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate engineers and contribute to the development of internal standards and procedures.
Requirements
- Degree (or higher) in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward chartership with a relevant professional institution.
- Strong experience in ground engineering, with demonstrable expertise in pile and deep foundation design.
- Sound understanding of soil–structure interaction, ground risk, and the influence of construction methods on design.
- Experience working in a consultancy role with close contractor interfaces, balancing independent judgement with buildability and commercial awareness.
- Proven ability to manage technically complex or ground-risk-intensive elements of projects through design and construction stages.
- Clear and effective communicator, able to explain ground engineering risks and design decisions to clients, contractors, and project teams.
